Local prep athletes use early signing period

More than two dozen East Valley athletes signed national letters of intent to compete and study at Division I universities during the NCAA’s early signing period over the last week.

The East Valley’s baseball and basketball teams contributed the most to the signings.

Chaparral’s Ike Davis (Arizona State), Austin Yount (Stanford) and Tim Sherlock (Duke) all signed to play the sport collegiately.

So did Horizon’s Jeff Urlaub (ASU) and Matt Hall (ASU), Mountain View’s

Stetson Banks (BYU), Cactus Shadows’ Brett Jacobson (Vanderbilt) and Gilbert’s Ryan Cisterna (Arizona).

Tim Maiden (Texas-San Antonio), Nkem Ojougboh (Texas-San Antonio) and Chris Osborn (Air Force) will play basketball after graduating from Scottsdale Christian.

Pinnacle’s Ray Murdoch will play at San Diego and Mesa’s Matt Komenda signed with Utah Valley State College.

Mesquite’s Andrea Videbeck (Fresno State), Seton Catholic’s Christina Wirth (Vanderbilt) and Desert Vista’s Kalei Nance (New Mexico State) all signed to play women’s basketball, while Corona del Sol’s Sy Janousek and Amy Rosenkrantz will continue on as teammates at Vermont.

Desert Mountain’s Stefanie Ewing (Oregon State), Felicia Coffey (Niagara), Desert Vista’s Jennifer Newman (UNLV) and Seton’s Meghan Mullin (Nebraska) signed to play softball.

Jessica Elley of Gilbert, Leah Lathrop of Desert Vista and Merina Mercer of Chandler signed to play volleyball at Cincinnati, San Diego State and ASU, respectively.

Lynley Wasson of Corona will play tennis at North Texas and Sydney Lyles of Desert Vista will golf at Minnesota. Lauren Cox of Chaparral will swim at Missouri and Courtney Finuf of Desert Vista will swim at BYU.
