Phoenix Country Day kids in tennis semifinals

Patrick Taylor of Phoenix Country Day moved on to the semifinals in the singles bracket of the 3A/2A boys tennis state tournament after blowing by Adam Wright of Thatcher and Derek Tilley of Tucson Pusch Ridge.

Taylor will challenge Dallin Evans of Safford for a spot in the championship at 7:15 a.m. today at Phoenix Tennis Center.

The other semifinal features Andrew Reiff of Phoenix Christian and Luke Dumyhan of Sedona Red Rock.


In 3A/2A doubles, Todd Jenkins and Peter Brown of Phoenix Country Day advanced to the semifinals. In 1A doubles, Daniel Parsons and Ben Mayer of Phoenix Valley Lutheran moved on to the semifinals.


In 3A/2A singles, Kendra Simon of Phoenix Country Day rolled through competition to the semifinals. Teammate Arianna Rose also advanced to the semifinals. Nicole Perez of Fountain Hills advanced to the last four without dropping a game along the way. Perez and Rose will face each other today.

In 3A/2A doubles, Codi Sichling and Arianna Rivera of Florence advanced to the semifinals. Kayla Jaquette and Serena Waardenburg joined their Florence teammates in the semis.

Dani Serrano and Andi Brookhouser of Fountain Hills fell in the quarterfinals.

Scottsdale Christian’s Aubrey and MacKenzie Swift fell to Thatcher’s Demi Kempton and Brinlee Goodman and Christine Stockslager and Jessica Gordan of Phoenix Country Day were eliminated in the first round.

Sichling and Rivera will take on Mya Towne and Jamie Shephard of Pusch Ridge while Jaquette and Waardenburg will play Tombstone’s Kate Arnett and Stephanie Vos today at the Phoenix Tennis Center.

In 1A doubles, Surrey Garden’s Jessie Ingraham and Chrissy Izquierdo defeated Jessica Cleland and Vanessa Olevarez of Valley Lutheran to advance in the first round.


Dion Jordan won the shot put and both hurdle events to lead Chandler High (187.5) past Hamilton (129), Mesquite (127), Highland (100.5) and Gilbert (100) in the 5A Fiesta Region tournament at Chandler. Bryce Lamb also won two events for the Wolves. Ryan Milus won the 100 and 200 meters for the Huskies and Derek Breinholt took the 1,600 and 3,200 for the Hawks. ...

Jared Call won both hurdle events and Gerardo Trevizo won both the discus and the shot put to lead Queen Creek (233) to the 4A-II East Sky Region tournament title at Queen Creek. Kevin Rayes won the 800 and 1,600 for runner-up Higley (195).


Larrisa Matthews and Mischa Carson both won two events to help Chandler (277.33) in the 5A Fiesta Region meet at Chandler. Gilbert (108.33) was second, followed by Highland (103.33). Courtney Golden won the 800 and 1,600 for Gilbert. ...

Ashley Workman won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 to lead Queen Creek (220.5) to victory in the 4A-II East Sky Region meet at Queen Creek. Heather Sanders and Lauren Gale of second-place Higley (135.5) both won multiple events.
