Chris Caves’ first RBI Tuesday afternoon came on a bloop single to left field. But his final RBI of the day in the eighth inning was huge in more ways than one.

Caves launched a first-pitch home run to lead off the eighth, a 380-foot-plus blast that gave visiting Red Mountain a 3-2 win over Dobson, keeping the Mountain Lions’ playoff hopes alive in the 5A East Valley Region.

Caves entered the game batting .459 and added three hits to his season total. His homer made a winner of starter Travis Johnson (2-3), who gave up two first-inning runs but settled in for perhaps his best outing of the season.

Johnson allowed four hits in going the distance. He balked in a run in the first inning and gave up a solo homer to the Mustangs’ Jason Sherrer.
