05/08 - Softball roundup: Red Mountain pulls even with Mountain View

Britnee Edwards blasted her sixth home run of the season to lead off the ninth inning Wednesday and Red Mountain went on to add two more runs and defeat Mountain View, 3-0, to even their best-of-three 5A East Valley Region softball series at 1-1 at Quail Run Park in Mesa.

The teams play the deciding game of their series tonight at 7 at Quail Run. The winner will be the East Valley Region’s No. 1 seed at state and the loser will be the region’s No. 2 seed.

DOBSON 2, MESA 0: Felicia Coffey went 2-for-3 and threw a four-hit shutout as the host Mustangs clinched the third spot in the 5A East Valley Region. The Mustangs (16-13) swept the Jackrabbits, 2-0. Regina Anguiano had two hits for Mesa.

MESQUITE 3, HIGHLAND 2: Sheree Achilles scored the winning run on an overthrow as the host Wildcats (26-5) defeated the Hawks in a 5A Fiesta regional game. Brooke Neuman went 3-for-4 to lead Mesquite, while Justine Pineda had a double and an RBI for Highland.

HAMILTON 1, YUMA KOFA 0:

Stephanie Araiza knocked in Brittany Rumfiel with a sacrifice fly to lead the visiting Huskies (14-14) over the Kings in the first game of their 5A Fiesta Region series. Katie Adkins struck out 11 and pitched a shutout for Hamilton, while Andrea Renteria struck out 11 and gave up just four hits for Kofa.

CORONA DEL SOL 6, DESERT VISTA 1: Megan Willis went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to lead the host Aztecs (31-3) to a best-ofthree series sweep over the Thunder in 5A Central Region tournament play. Whitney Lebowitz and Katie Laing were both 2-for-3, adding one RBI apiece for Corona. Desert Vista’s Meredith Drahota was 3-for-4.

PHOENIX ST. MARY’S 8, HORIZON 5:

The Knights defeated the Huskies in the 5A Desert Valley regional. Horizon will face Phoenix North Canyon today at 1:45 p.m., with the loser ending up with the No. 3 seed. The winner will move on to face Phoenix St. Mary’s at 3:45 p.m. for the No. 1 seed.

PHOENIX NORTH CANYON 6, PHOENIX XAVIER 0: Rachel Burger threw 6 2 /3 perfect innings to lead the visiting Rattlers (15-15) over the Gators in a 5A Desert Valley regional game.
