Top-seeded Desert Mountain stayed in the winners' bracket of the Division I state baseball tournament with an 8-5 win over No. 4 Pinnacle on Saturday night at Tempe Diablo Stadium.
The Wolves jumped out to an 8-2 lead through four innings and then staved off a late Pioneers rally. Pinnacle had the tying run at the plate but Desert Mountain reliever Cody Erickson struck out Gerard Hernandez with runners on first and third to end the contest.
Desert Mountain is one win away from advancing to the state championship game. It will take on No. 2 seed Tucson on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Tempe Diablo Stadium.
Pinnacle drops down to the losers' bracket, where it will face No. 10 Chaparral on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Sunnyslope 7, Seton Catholic 2: The Sentinels fell for the first time in the Division II state tournament, as the defending-champion Vikings scored two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings to break open a close game. Sunnyslope starter Cody Bergkamp threw 131 pitches in the complete-game victory, including seven hits allowed and eight strikeouts. Matt Pawlowski had two hits and pitched well in relief for the Sentinels, while Daniel Garlid had Seton's only RBI of the night. Seton hadn't lost in 19 straight games but now drops to the elimination bracket. The Sentinels will face off with Notre Dame on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Camelback Ranch in Glendale.
