Jelani Huma, Casey Rarrick and Naomi Reyes scored all of the points for the Saguaro girls basketball team, Wednesday, to help the Sabercats edge Barry Goldwater 43-42, making them 2-0 on the first day of the Lady Titans Winter Hoops Classic.
Huma led Saguaro with 19 points followed closely by Casey Rarrick’s 18. Teammate Naomi Reyes was the only other Sabercat to score, finishing with six points.
Huma also added nine rebounds, five assists and eight steals.
It was the second win of the day for Saguaro (10-5), after beating North, 50-44, earlier in the day. The Sabercats are one of two teams in Pool D who are undefeated.
Pool play will continue today. Other teams which are undefeated are Coconino and Thunderbird in Pool A, Notre Dame and Peoria in Pool B, Arcadia and Centennial in Pool C, and Ironwood in Pool D.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Saguaro 50, North 44: Casey Rarrick scored a team-high 19 points, while Jelani Huma added 12 to lead the Sabercats to victory.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Saguaro 98, Campo Verde 63: Ryan Berg finished with a game-high 33 points as the Sabercats exploded for 44 second quarter points and 30 third quarter points to burn the Coyotes. Three other Saguaro players finished the game in double figures including Matt Hauser (14), Mike Hauser (13) and Jordan Nevels (10). The Sabercats are now 11-3 overall.
Chandler 71, Carl Hayden 63: The Wolves’ wolfpack of Kameron Casey, Daquise Gains and Marco Morales were too much for the Falcons to handle, as the three combined to score 54 of Chandler’s 71 points. Casey tallied with 22, gains had 21 and Morales finished with 11, respectively. The win pushed the Wolves’ record to 6-8.
Scottsdale Christian 61, Chandler 48: Clay Crookman had 20 points, while teammate Jared Frame scored 19 to help the Eagles cruise to a win and improve to 6-2 overall.
Valley Christian 61, Sunrise Mountain 54: The Trojans used a 19-6 second quarter run to overcome a slow start and defeat the Mustangs.
BOYS SOCCER
Dobson 5, Perry 1: The Mustangs (5-3) used goals from Jarred Merino, Abraham Pina, Eric Jelen, Kevin Macias and Glen Asare to defeat the Pumas in the Mustang Soccer Classic at Red Mountain Park. Dobson led 3-0 at halftime.
