Mesquite boys basketball coach Tom Saltzstein has withdrawn the letter of resignation he sent to school administrators on Friday.

In an e-mail directed to principal Cecillia Peterson on Monday, Saltzstein called his coaching and teaching positions at the school a ‘dream job.’

"After much soul searching and rounds of discussion with my mentors, family and colleagues, I have come to a conclusion that I was rash in my decision to resign my position," Saltzstein said in the e-mail.

On Saturday, Mesquite athletic director Anthony Scanio said Saltzstein was not asked to resign.

That conflicts with a source close to the situation, who said there was a meeting between Saltzstein, Scanio and Peterson on Thursday in which Peterson told Saltzstein that she would be bringing in a new basketball coach.

Saltzstein resigned as coach the next day, but has now changed his mind.

"My family and I are a Mesquite Wildcat family and are deeply rooted in the Mesquite Wildcat community," the e-mail said. "I am looking forward to working together in the ultimate goal, which is for the betterment of each and every student and student-athlete, at Mesquite High School. I am looking forward to continuing my coaching and teaching career at MHS."

A message left with Peterson’s secretary on Monday was not returned. Voice mails for Scanio and Saltzstein were also not returned.

Mesquite went 25-5 last season, winning the 5A-I Central Region tournament before losing to Corona del Sol in the first round of the state tournament.
