No. 7 Notre Dame upset No. 2 Buckeye Verrado, 3-1, in the quarterfinals of the Division II boys soccer state tournament on Saturday.
Michael Truty, David Seamans and Grayson Naquin scored a goal each for the Saints (14-3). Notre Dame will play Tucson Catalina Foothills in the semifinals on Wednesday at Paradise Valley High School at 5 p.m.
In other Division II matchups ... No. 3 Marcos de Niza's remarakable season turnaround was knocked out by No. 6 Tucson Catalina Foothills, 3-1.
The Padres finished off a great season, as they had not been to the playoffs, or had a winning record, since 2007.
Also, No. 5 Tucson Salpointe beat No. 4 Phoenix Greenway, 5-0, and No. 1 Glendale Apollo beat No. 8 Nogales, 3-2, in overtime. Apollo and Salpointe will meet in the other Div. II semifinal at 7 p.m. at Paradise Valley H.S.
Division III
No. 3 Coronado beat No. 11 Gilbert Christian, 6-0. Jesus Garcia, Miguel Gonzalez and Jose Medina each scored two goals for the Dons (13-1). Coronado will play No. 7 Douglas on Tuesday at Arcadia High School at 5 p.m. Douglas beat No. 2 Phoenix Northwest Christian 2-1, in two overtimes.
No. 1 Seton Catholic was knocked out by No. 9 Fountain Hills 2-1. After struggling against No. 16 Scottsdale Christian in a first-round win on Tuesday, the Sentinels saw their season come to end with a 13-2 overall record. Fountain Hills will face No. 5 Phoenix Cortez, which beat No. 13 Tucson Palo Verde 8-1.
