No. 5 Gilbert won its season opener in baseball Wednesday, 10-1 over host Mesquite.

Starting Gilbert pitcher Devin Fuller earned the win with four scoreless innings. Fuller allowed only one hit, struck out seven and had a two-run double that started the Tigers’ six-run second inning.

Thomas Gutierrez went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Gilbert.

BASEBALL

Mountain Pointe (1-0) easily handled visiting Yuma 12-2 in a five-inning victory. The Pride’s C.J. Cron was 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. He also collected the win, pitching four scoreless innings. … Pitcher Tyler Giannonatti hit a walk-off grand slam, his only hit of the game, as host Corona del Sol beat Peoria Sunrise Mountain 7-4 in a 5A nonregion game. Giannonatti also got the win in relief.

SOFTBALL

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Chandler catcher Tyler Weldon stroked a two-run double that proved to be the game-winning hit as the Wolves defeated Dobson 2-1 in the first round of the Dobson-Marcos tournament. Chandler pounded out 14 hits to beat Phoenix Moon Valley 14-4 in the second round. Weldon was 3-for-4 for the Wolves (2-0) with two doubles vs. Moon Valley. …

Phoenix Xavier’s Stephanie Janes had a complete-game, 11-strikeout performance in the season opener as the Gators routed Desert Vista, 10-1. Laura White and Kaitlin Bayley each homered for the Gators. …

Mackenzie Popescue struck out 14 and threw a complete game in Chaparral’s 2-1 victory over Phoenix Sunnyslope.

Peach Luna knocked in both runs for the Firebirds (1-0). …

Stellar pitching performances by Casey Edmondson and Talor Haro helped visiting Highland defeat Skyline 14-0 in a five-inning mercy-rule victory. The two pitchers combined for a perfect game.

Edmondson threw the first three innings and struck out six batters while Haro finished with three strikeouts in two innings of work. The two also combined for five RBIs. …

Sarah Washburn tossed a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts, as host Red Mountain beat Queen Creek 5-2 in the Lady Lions Classic.
