Gilbert Higley’s Amy Garland was 6 of 8 at the foul line in the fourth quarter to clinch a victory for the Knights as they upended visiting Tempe High, 37-31, in a 4A East Sky Region girls basketball game Friday night.

The Knights (9-14,2-4) trailed Tempe 26-25 entering the final quarter but used good team defense to seal the win.

“Our guards played really well on defense, and shut down their (Tempe) guards in the fourth quarter. As a team we just turned it up a notch on defense,” Higley assistant coach Eric Kunik said.

It was the first loss in region play for the Buffaloes. Garland had a game-high 18 points for Higley and Shaya Harrison had 14 points for Tempe.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Amy Patton had the game-winning shot with a layup off an offensive rebound in the final seconds of the game as the McClintock (22-3, 4-1) defeated host Phoenix Thunderbird, 49-48, in a 4A Desert Sky Region matchup. Patton ended the night with 22 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. …

Chaparral’s Aria Krumwiede scored a game-high 21 points in a 58-51 win over visiting Pinnacle. Sam Russell recorded 11 points for Firebirds (19-4, 5-0). Michelle Berry led all Pioneer scorers with 17 points. …

Brooke Jackson had 21 points to lead host Mountain View past Dobson 65-50 in a 5A East Valley Region game. Jackson also had eight rebounds and tied her own school record with 10 steals. Stevie Kamp added 16 points for the Toros (20-1, 4-0). …

Callina Hurley poured in 30 points and Ashlee Brown scored 24 as Chandler (15-4, 4-0) cruised by host Gilbert (17-5, 2-2), 86-61, in 5A Fiesta Region play.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Charles Ward scored 22 points and Arcadia rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit as the Titans (6-0) downed visiting Apache Junction, 60-57, in 4A East Sky Region action. Jimmy Cowles scored a game-high 25 points for the Prospectors. …

Jeremy Melcher-Post had a career-high 31 points as host Horizon Honors (12-7, 7-1) beat Phoenix Precision High 70-48 in a 2A Metro Region game.

GIRLS SOCCER

Gilbert scored three first-half goals as the Tigers downed host Hamilton, 4-1, in 5A Fiesta Region action. Rachel Clause scored two goals for the Tigers (17-5, 8-0) and Boston Burger and Marissa Jorgenson each added a goal. Lyndsey Colley’s goal for Hamilton (7-11-1, 3-5) was the first goal Gilbert has allowed in 5A Fiesta Region play this season. …

Shawn-Tae Greene scored four goals as visiting Dobson beat Mesa High 8-1 in a 5A East Valley Region game.

BOYS SOCCER

Finlay O’Niell scored in the 67th minute of Highland’s 1-0 win over host Chandler in 5A Fiesta Region play. Greg Krekler had the assist on the play, and goalkeeper Kord Johnson recorded six saves in the shutout for the Hawks (14-3-2, 7-1). …

Garrett Noel had two goals as host Gilbert beat Hamilton 3-1 in a 5A Fiesta Region game. Ross Wood added a goal for Gilbert (12-5,6-2).
