Prep Highlights: Red Mtn. boys beat Saguaro

Mesa Red Mountain’s Deonte Roberts stole the show with 25 points and 16 rebounds and Keawe Enos had a strong performance with 22 points as the Mountain Lions defeated Scottsdale Saguaro 69-58 Monday in the Salpointe Tip-Off Classic boys basketball tournament at Chandler High School.

Steven Morin led the Sabercats with 20 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Chandler’s Devirous Johnson recorded a double-double in the team’s first game, scoring a game-high 22 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, in an 82-48 rout of visiting Yuma Kofa in the Salpointe Tip-Off Classic. In another Tip-Off Classic game at Chandler, Highland squeaked out a victory against Goodyear Desert Edge, 81-79, behind Nick Witherell’s 23-point performance. Matt Carlino contributed 19 points to go along with Chris Johnson’s 12 points for Hawks (1-0).

Gary Gold scored a team-high 17 points to lead Phoenix Country Day to a convincing victory over visiting Tonopah Valley, 73-54.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Dariff Blum had 19 points and Kelly Tweito added 15 as Saguaro beat Marcos de Niza 64-55 in the Highland High School tournament at Highland. Joey Burke led the Padres with 26 points.

In another tournament game, Whitney Southerland and Justine Johnson led Gilbert in scoring in the Tigers’ 49-39 victory over Dobson. Southerland and Johnson scored 15 and 13, respectively.

Amy Patton had 22 points and 10 rebounds, Stefanee Perez added 15 points and McClintock used 20 team steals and a 20-4 third quarter to cruise to a 51-41 victory over Avondale La Joya in the Moon Valley Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament at Phoenix Moon Valley High School. In other tourney action, Stephanie Douthit recorded a game-high 22 points in Desert Mountain’s 57-29 win over Coronado. Katelyn Bielli added nine points for the Wolves (1-0).

Sierra Aulik had 12 points and Katasha Braaten had eight points as Apache Junction defeated Tucson Desert View 42-27 in their third game of the Queen Creek Turkey Shootout at Queen Creek High School. The Prospectors also defeated the Skyline, 49-31, and Tucson Sunnyside 44-37 in games earlier in the day.
