VX Roundup 12/15: Campo Verde free throws sink Higley late

Spencer Perry hit two free throws for Campo Verde with two seconds left in the game to give the Coyotes a 58-56 comeback victory against Higley on Thursday night.

The Knights (7-2), who led 42-33 after three quarters, tried a half-court pass followed by a lob towards the rim with two seconds left, but the shot rimmed out at the buzzer.

Justin Schaffer led Campo Verde (7-4) with 17 points.

Kyle Gomez led Higley with 15 points and Tanner Lee added 14 points, including 4-for-5 from the three point line.

The two teams combined to shoot 17 free throws in the fourth quarter.

In other boys basketball action, Jake Toolson led Highland with 18 points as the Hawks beat Dobson, 58-52. Marcus Tipton led the Mustangs with 20 points. Dobson led 26-21 at halftime but Highland won the third quarter, 23-12, to take the lead that they wouldn't relinquish.

Mesquite had no problem with Phoenix South Mountain in an 82-39 win. The Wildcats scored 35 points in the third quarter alone and cruised from there. Sami Bzai led Mesquite with 21 points while Sidney Ocansey and Zack Zimmermann finished with 16 points each.

Mountain View fell to Davis High School (Utah), 63-56, in the Great Western Shootout in Orem, Utah. Camyn Boone led the Toros (5-2) with 27 points. Mountain View will play in a consolation game against a team TBD on Friday.

Girls Basketball

Host-Highland beat Dobson, 55-47. Jordan Hagen and Amy Pavlica led the Hawks (12-1) with 11 points apiece. Katherine Hamilton led the Mustangs with 18 points and Tori Lloyd added 14 in the loss.

Girls Soccer

Red Mountain beat Highland in penalty kicks after a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation and both overtimes. Caylee Carter scored two goals for the Mountain Lions and Paige Morris scored twice for the Hawks.

    Coaches at Campo are doing a great job. This team is starting to come around. 4 wins in a row. Lost Schaeffer, future DII player to knee injury, but they'll be ok
