Inside preps: AIA ponders extra scrutiny of transfers

Scottsdale Notre Dame quarterback Sean Renfree, who earlier this week made a verbal commitment to attend Duke, is one of two Arizona players to be selected to Parade Magazine’s 45th annual All-America High School Football Team. Renfree and Glendale Mountain Ridge kicker Jeff Locke are among 58 athletes from 24 states to make the team.

Bunger’s return

Gilbert High girls basketball coach Tom Bunger, who held the same position at Mesa Mountain View three years ago (a six-year tenure), returns to Mountain View tonight with the his team atop the AIA Power Ranking System and Mountain View seeded No. 2. This will be the first meeting between the schools since Bunger was let go by Mountain View following the 2004-2005 season. Bunger won 129 games in six years at Mountain View (21 wins per season). Henry Bribiescas, Bunger’s successor, has 76 wins in two-plus seasons (25 per year).

4A power-ranking woes

Local 4A basketball teams, boys and girls, aren’t showing well in the AIA Power Ranking System as the regular season nears completion. In 4A-I the top rated boys team is Scottsdale Saguaro at No. 9. In 4A-I girls, the top local is No. 7 Scottsdale Chaparral. For 4A-II boys its Phoenix Arcadia (No. 6) and 4A-II girls it’s 3A transplant Chandler Seton at No. 3.

All-Trib watch: Scottsdale Desert Mountain guard Stephanie Douthit scored 23 points Tuesday in a 57-50 loss to Phoenix St. Mary’s. Douthit leads local 5A players in scoring, averaging 20.3 points a game. She is averaging 7.8 rebounds and three assists per game as well.
