Devante Walker and Zack Patton combined to score 43 of Campo Verde’s 69 points to lead the Coyotes to a slim 69-65 overtime victory versus visiting Higley on Thursday.
Entering the fourth quarter, Campo Verde found itself down six points before the Coyotes staged a comeback and outscored the Knights 16-10 to force the extra period.
In overtime, Walker, Patton and teammate Spencer Perry, who finished with 10 points, were able to do just enough to help the Coyotes (5-3) put Higley away in the final minutes.
The Knights’ Nick Colston led the team with 18 points. Together with Ryan Waters, Mason Johnson and Kenny Jean-Pierre, Higley was able to overcome a two-point deficit at halftime to give the Knights(4-2) a six-point lead after three quarters of play.
Waters finished with 14 points, while Johnson and Jean-Pierre each had 10 apiece.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Mesquite 67, South Mountain 35: Tre Myles scored 16 points and blocked 4 shots to lead the Wildcats to a win in which Mesquite led from start to finish. The Wildcats held the Jaguars to just 12 first-half points. Mesquite’s Zack Green led all scorers with 17 points.
Mountain View 52, Douglas (Nev) 46: Playing in the First Round of the Wild West Shootout in Reno, Nev., Payton Gastrup scored 26 points to lead the Toros into the second round versus Hug High School.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Pinnacle 83, Chaparral 32: Sydney Wiese finished with 17 points and 10 assists, while teammate Britta Nordstrom added 16 to help the Pioneers push their perfect record to 15-0. Pinnacle received more scoring from Kenna McDavis and Madie Reinhart, who scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, but also got the job done on defense, allowing just 13 points in the final three periods combined. Alex Gilligan scored a team-high 10 points for the Firebirds who dropped to 3-7 with the loss.
BOYS SOCCER
Mesa 3, Mountain View 0: Mesa goals were scored by sophomore Manny Venzor (on his birthday), senior Jose Barerra and junior Brian Perea. Matt Winkler had his fourth shutout of the season. Mesa is now 3-0-1 in power ranking matches and 5-1-1 overall while Mountain View is 2-3. The Mesa Jackrabbit Soccer tournament starts Saturday.
Dobson 1, Chandler 0: The win puts Dobson at 3-1 in league play. Senior captain Matt Leon scored on an assist by junior James Deroon. Jose Rico Garibay earned the shutout with four saves.
Campo Verde 7, Marcos de Niza 2: The Coyotes’ Samuel Gleadle scored two goals, while teammates Beau McKenna, Briley Guarneri, Peyton Oyler, Marc Costello and Derek Anderson each had one to help Campo Verde win going away. The win improves the Coyotes record to 9-1 overall.
Scottsdale Christian Academy 4, Scottsdale Prep 1: Cole Lenderink and Jacob Drenth each had two goals each to pace the Eagles. Lenderink also added an assist, as did teammate Karsten Kem.
