After fumbling away its first possession and allowing Coronado to score on its opening drive, Queen Creek needed to assert itself.
The Bulldogs did just that, reeling off 29 unanswered points before halftime en route to a 32-14 win over the Dons in the 4A Division II East Sky Region opener for both schools at Queen Creek.
Senior defensive back/wide receiver Cody Degroot led the Queen Creek scoring charge. Degroot scored on a 12-yard pass from quarterback Dayton Jones to give the Bulldogs a 14-7 lead early in the second quarter, then capped the first half scoring by returning a blocked field goal 75 yards for a touchdown.
"I was just thinking run," Degroot said about his return. "I got a lot of good blocks."
The Bulldogs (5-1) even turned mistakes into success, as kicker Dominic Gamboa took a botched snap on the extra point after Degroot's return and ran it in for a two-point conversion.
Senior Roberto Villalpondo and junior David Hollis led the Bulldogs' rushing attack, combining for 198 yards and a touchdown.
"What's encouraging is it's not one kid," Queen Creek coach Curt LeBlanc said. "A lot of kids are making plays.
Quarterback Andy Klein completed 12-of-18 passes for 141 yards for Coronado (2-4, 0-1). Nolan Lamb caught eight passes for 118 yards.
