Thursday roundup: Shepard limits Chandler to 4 hits

Mesa Mountain View scored two runs in the top of the seventh to defeat host Chandler Hamilton 3-1 in a 5A nonregion softball game Wednesday.

Mallory Shepard (11-7) pitched a complete game for the Toros, giving up just four hits.

Alex Mead led the offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base.


Miriam Asaki won both the 110- and 300-meter high hurdles as well as the long jump to help Desert Mountain defeat St. Mary’s 78-33.


Mesquite easily handled Phoenix Carl Hayden on the road, 9-0. The Wildcats (20-8) collected 16 hits and were led by Stephanie Hagelsieb, who was 3-for-5, and Kristin Aaron, who was 3-for-3.


Gilbert beat visiting Westwood 2-0 with a pitching gem by Thomas Gutierrez. Gutierrez earned the shutout by scattering seven hits, striking out seven and walking none.

Chris Reese went 2-for-2 and scored both runs. …

Jose Bracamonte drove in five and Brian Davis went 2-for-4 with four RBIs as visiting Chandler toppled Desert Mountain in a high-scoring affair, 13-10. …

Higley overcame an early three-run deficit to defeat host Desert Edge 7-6. Down 3-0, Scott Ross connected on a three-run homer in the fourth inning to get the Knights back into the game.

Higley later scored two runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win.
