In the spring, Ike Davis and Austin Yount will try to win their third 4A state title with the Chaparral baseball team. Then it appears that they will become intense rivals.

Wednesday was the first day high school athletes could make commitments to colleges for next fall in all sports except football. Davis and Yount committed to attend Pac-10 Conference schools: Davis to Arizona State and Yount to Stanford.

"It definitely will be different," said Yount of the possibility of playing against his Firebirds teammate. "It will be exciting."

Davis, the son of former New York Yankees reliever Ron Davis, was recruited by ASU as both a first baseman and pitcher. He picked the Sun Devils over another college power, Texas.

"The coaches and players were really nice," said Davis of the Sun Devils. "ASU is a great place to go."

Yount, who was recruited as a shortstop and pitcher, picked Stanford for more than just the Cardinal baseball program.

"I wanted to get a good education," said Yount, the nephew of baseball Hall of Famer Robin Yount.

Whether Davis and Yount actually ever meet on a Pac-10 diamond remains to be seen. They both are expected to be drafted in next June’s major league baseball draft. Neither ruled out turning pro after high school if the offer is right.

"I have no clue," said Davis, a talented basketball player who won’t play for the Firebirds this coming season to avoid a possible injury that could affect his baseball career. "I really haven’t thought about it." Yount also said turning pro is far from his mind.

"At this point, I have no idea," said Yount.
