Westwood High school has hired Paul Wilson, a prep coach from the San Diego area, as its new boys basketball coach, athletic director Thad Gates said Friday.

Wilson has 20 years coaching experience — 10 as a college assistant and the last 10 as a high school head coach at La Jolla Country Day in San Diego. Wilson replaces Shane Burcar, who left last month to take the vacant position at Mesa High after one year at Westwood.

‘‘We’re happy to get a guy with his coaching experience,’’ Gates said. ‘‘He’ll teach on campus here, and we think he’ll be a good fit for us.’’

Wilson had an 18-10 record this past season at La Jolla Country Day. He planned on relocating to the Valley after the 2005-2006 season was completed.
