Cactus Shadows’ running back Nic Erickson got the job done on both sides of the ball Thursday night, rushing for 41 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries while picking off two passes on defense to lead the Falcons to a 27-10 victory over visiting Greenway.
After going up 7-0 in the first quarter on a 5-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bryce Kinsler to John Leonard, Erickson scored on a 6-yard run to put up 14-0 early.
A 3-yard Harrison Johnson touchdown run brought the Demons to within 7, but then Kinsler threw a 58-yard pass to Leonard, the longest of the game. That led to a 40-yard field goal by kicker Nick Miller, giving the Falcons a 17-10 halftime lead.
Erickson then scored on a 3-yard run in the third, while Miller connected on a 27-yard field goal to cap the scoring for Cactus Shadows.
Leonard finished the game with 11 catches for 171 yards and one touchdown, while Kinsler was 20-for-30 passing with 247 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Saguaro had four players finish in the top five, Thursday, including first place finisher Austin Colaric, as the Sabercats defeated host Coronado 168-193 at Papago Golf course in Phoenix.
Colaric shot a 4-over 40 for the day to finish one stroke ahead of second place finisher and teammate Travis Steinheiser.
Desert Ridge had two golfers tie for first place and two others tie for fourth as the Jaguars shot a team score of 152 to take first place in its match at Apache Creek Golf Club in Apache Junction.
Dylan Busch and Derek Moreira each shot two-over par to tie for first place. David Busch and Devon Ridd each finished with scores of 39 to tie for fourth place.
Apache Junction took second with a score of 167 followed by Combs (225) and South Mountain (260).
Cactus Shadows defeated visiting Apache Junction in straight sets to win its 4A-I Desert Sky region opener.
The Falcons beat the Prospectors 25-21, 25-16, 25-21.
Summer Anderson led the way for Cactus Shadows (3-1, 0-1) with 12 kills. Shan England added nine kills and four blocks, Carly Lenven finished with eight kills and three blocks and Jordan Smith had 18 digs.
The match marked the first loss of the season for Apache Junction as the Prospectors dropped to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in region play.
