Host Mesa High pulled a stunning upset on Friday, beating previously unbeaten state powerhouse Goodyear Millennium 1-1, 4-1 in penalty kicks in a boys nonregion soccer match. Millennium entered the match at 13-0 and was ranked No. 14 in the nation by ESPN.
After playing to a scoreless tie in regulation, Robert Renteria scored in the 4th minute of the first overtime, 84th minute of the game, to give the Jackrabbits (11-4) the lead.
In the second overtime, Millennium made a furious push to tie the game, but Mesa goalkeeper Steven Viall made a lunging save to maintain the one-goal lead. Despite Viall's heroics, Millennium eventually tied the game in the 92nd minute and sent the match into penalty kicks.
Viall, who had nine saves overall in the game, then made one more key save in the shootout, and Mesa netted all four of their free kicks to clinch the upset.
Brandon Christie scored a hat trick and Storm Lilly added two goals as Gilbert beat up on Basha 6-0.
