State soccer roundup: D.V. girls edge Hamilton

Desert Vista, the No. 6 seed, and Hamilton, the No. 3 seed, battled through two scoreless halves and a pair of scoreless overtime periods before the Thunder finally prevailed 6-5 in penalty kicks in a 5A Division I girls quarterfinal Saturday at Hamilton High School.

Desert Vista will play surprising Corona del Sol at 7 p.m. Thursday at Campo Verde High School in the semifinals.

The Aztecs are the No. 15 seed in the 16-team tournament.

GIRLS SOCCER

5A-I

Xavier 6, San Luis 0: The Gators continued to steamroll their way through the state tournament with another blowout victory.

Xavier has outscored its opponents 13-0 in the first two games of the postseason and will next face Highland in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Thursday at Campo Verde High School.

4A-I

Cactus Shadows 2, Marana 0: The Falcons earned their spot in the semifinals with its shutout victory over Marana at Red Mountain Park.

Cactus Shadows will face Prescott at 7 p.m. Thursday at Tucson High School for a shot at the championship game.

Other scores: Catalina Foothills beat Apollo 4-0, Flowing Wells edged Sahuaro 1-0 and Prescott defeated Sabino 1-0. Catalina Foothills will play Flowing Wells in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Thursday at Tucson High School.

1A/2A/3A

Estrella Foothills 4, Tempe Prep 0: The top-seeded Wolves proved to be too much for the Knights in their meeting at Red Mountain Park. Estrella Foothills will play Sedona Red Rock at 3 p.m. Friday at Paradise Valley High School in the semifinal round.

Sedona Red Rock 2, Valley Christian 1: The fourth-seeded Trojans had their season come to an end in dramatic fashion as they fell to fifth-seeded Sedona Red Rock in overtime.

Yuma Catholic 3, Fountain Hills 2: The No. 11 Shamrocks pulled off a major upset of No. 3 Fountain Hills to move on to play for a shot at the state title. Yuma Catholic will face Northwest Christian at 1 p.m. Friday at Paradise Valley High School.

Other scores: Northwest Christian defeated Pusch Ridge 2-1.

BOYS SOCCER

5A-I

Gilbert 2, San Luis 1: The Tigers edged host San Luis in overtime to move on to the semifinals thanks to Tyler Gillaspie’s goal in the first overtime period. Brandon Christie scored Gilbert’s first goal of the game in the 61st minute.

J.J. Meier had 12 saves for the Tigers.

Gilbert will play Hamilton at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Campo Verde High School.

Corona del Sol 4, Kofa 1: The Aztecs defeated host Kofa to advance to play top-seeded Tucson Salpointe in the semifinals. Corona and Salpointe will kick off at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Campo Verde High School.

Salpointe 2, Mesquite 0: The Wildcats had their season ended on the road by the No. 1 Lancers.

4A-I

Apollo 3, Cactus Shadows 0: The No. 3 Falcons couldn’t get anything going against No. 4 Apollo in their quarterfinal match at Red Mountain Park. Apollo will play Canyon del Oro at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Tucson High School in the semifinals.

Other scores: Canyon del Oro edged Copper Canyon 3-2, Sabino shut out Agua Fria 4-0; Sahuaro defeated Catalina Foothills 1-0. Sabino and Sahuaro will play in the semifinal round at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Tucson High School.

1A/2A/3A

Pusch Ridge 1, Scottsdale Christian 0: The Eagles had their season ended by the top-ranked Lions at Red Mountain Park.

Pusch Ridge will play Safford in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday at Paradise Valley High School.

Safford 4, Valley Christian 1: The fourth-seeded Trojans fell to fifth-seeded Safford at Red Mountain Park to have their postseason run ended.

Florence 1, Fountain Hills 0: The seventh-seeded Falcons pushed No. 2 Florence to overtime but couldn’t come out on top in the end.

Florence will face Northwest Christian in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday at Paradise Valley High School.

Other score: Northwest Christian banked Estrella Foothills 4-0.
