VX Roundup 12/18: Mesa boys soccer advance to finals of own tournament

Mesa High advanced to the championship game of the Mesa Jackrabbit Invitational with a 2-1 victory over Queen Creek on Tuesday.

The Jackrabbits got goals from Brian Perea (second of the tournament) and Jose Barerra (5th of the tournament). Queen Creek scored its lone goal in the 77th minute on a free kick and Matt Winkler made a spectacular one on one save in the 79th minute to preserve the win.

Mesa will play Mountain View on Saturday in the championship game at 11 a.m. at Mesa High. The Toros beat Casa Grande Vista Grande, 3-2, in the other semifinals.


Boys Basketball

Host Dobson used a huge fourth quarter to pull away and beat Chandler, 81-60, on Tuesday night. The Mustangs (9-3) led by six at the end of the third quarter but pressure defense led to a 24-9 fourth quarter run for Dobson. Jaron Hopkins led a quartet of Mustangs with 26 points. Ryan Richardson added 18, Kodi Justice had 13 and Brian Nichols finished with 11. Marco Morales finished with 18 points to lead the Wolves (5-8).

Girls Basketball

Mountain View 55, Red Mountain 34: Cherokee Davis scored 10 of her game high 16 points in the second half to help the Toros extend their lead to put away the Lions. Armani Hawkins scored 14 points and Sabrina Haines added 11 points. The Toros improve to 8-4 and own a 6 game winning streak after coming back from La Jolla, CA 2-4. Mountain View will now play American Fork, UT Thurs, 6:45pm at Basha as part of the Nike TOC. Last season, the Toros won the Mike Desper Championship at the Nike TOC.

Queen Creek 46, Skyline 24:  Makaily Worthington led Queen Creek with 17 points as the Bulldogs beat Skyline. Sarah Hefington added seven points and 13 rebounds as Queen Creek outscored the Coyotes 16-6 in the fourth quarter to blow the game open.

Girls Soccer

Arcadia 7, South Mountain 0:  Junior Maddy Schneider started the scoring in the 7th minute with a header from junior Missy Dominick's corner kick. Dominick added a goal of her own after a well-timed run into the 18-yard area to meet sophomore Megan Hawkins rolling pass. The Lady Titans returned to the air when senior Anna Workman volleyed in a cross from junior Anika Carlson. Just before halftime, senior Tasha Friedman poked in a loose ball to give Arcadia a 4-0 cushion.  The second half was dominated by senior midfielder Rachel DiTullio. First, the co-captain played a diagonal ball for junior midfielder Sofie DeWulf, who scored for the third consecutive game. DiTullio headed in a corner kick from senior Anna Workman and DiTullio bent a powerful corner kick just inside the far post.  The Titans improved to 5-0 in conference and 9-1 overall.
