Top-seeded Horizon advanced to the 5A Division II state championship game after defeating Marcos de Niza, 11-1, in five innings at Surprise Baseball Stadium in the second game of the Pool A championship series.

The 13th-seeded Padres forced Game 2 after defeating Horizon 9-3 in Game 1.

The Huskies will face Desert Mountain for the title Saturday at 7 p.m. at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Horizon lost in the 5A-II championship last year to Desert Ridge, which is now playing in the 5A-I championship.

The Huskies led 6-0 after two innings and ace Joey Danner threw four innings for the victory.

In game one, the Padres' Garrett Taggart threw a complete game in the win, but Marcos de Niza couldn't find one more surge through this memorable state tournament run as the 13th seed.

The Wolves exploded on offense in beating Anthem Boulder Creek twice to make the title game. No. 3 Desert Mountain pulled away early and hung on for a 10-8 victory in game one.

In the nightcap, it went a step further. Desert Mountain led 16-4 after three innings and cruised to an 18-6 victory in five innings to advance.

David Greer had six RBI for the Wolves, which lost both power-point meetings to Horizon during the regular season.

Softball

The Rodriguez sisters and Megan Johnson are on a roll for Seton Catholic, which won 8-0 against Phoenix Thunderbird in Thursday night's 4A-II softball state semifinals at Rose Mofford Softball Complex.

Johnson hit a two-run home run and Kelsey Rodriguez had a two-run triple as part of a five-run fifth inning to blow the game open for the defending-champion Sentinels.

Olivia Bergman threw a two-hitter for the victory with eight strikeouts.

Seton Catholic will face Tucson Sahuarita for the 4A-II championship on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Rose Mofford Softball Complex.
