Prep roundup: Pinnacle girls capture 1st-ever region crown

For the first time in school history, Phoenix Pinnacle's girls basketball team won the Pima Region tournament title, defeating visiting Tempe Marcos de Niza, 54-40, Friday.

Tori Sheaffer led the Pioneers (26-4) with 21 points. The Padres' J.C. Clark scored a team-high 14 points.

Pinnacle will face Glendale Ironwood in the first round of the 5A-II state tournament.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Morgan Wohltman's basket in the lane with 1:54 remaining lifted host Highland to a 41-39 victory over Mesquite in the championship game of the 5A Fiesta Region tournament.

Stephanie Beeman led Highland with 10 points. Maylinn Smith and Kaneesha Lee paced Mesquite with 10 points each. ...

In the final of the Desert Valley Region tournament, Davelyn Whyte and St. Mary's defeated visiting Xavier, 70-63. White scored 30 points for the Knights (17-8). The Gators' Cassie Keating recorded 25 points. The teams will face each other in the first round of the 5A-I state tournament. ...

Stevie Kamp led all scorers with 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Mountain View's 52-47 win over Dobson, giving the Toros their first East Valley Region title since 2004. Kaitlin Meister and Brittany Konger each scored 11 for the Toros (24-5). Dobson's leading scorer was Katie Tomlinson with 10.

Mountain View will be the No. 1 seed going into the 5A-I tournament, facing Phoenix Alhambra at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Mountain View in the first round. ...

BOYS BASKETBALL

Highland outscored Gilbert 20-11 in the first period and went on to defeat the visiting Tigers, 66-49, in the 5A Fiesta Region tournament title game. Chris Johnson led four Highland players in double figures with 20 points. Matt Carlino (16), Nick Witherill (12) and Nick Johnson (10) helped avenge a 14-point loss to Gilbert last week. Kevin Soliz led Gilbert with 13 points. ...

Arizona State-bound Taylor Rohde scored 33 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as top-seeded Pinnacle (21-7) won its first 5A-II Pima Region championship since the 2004-2005 season by beating Marcos de Niza 71-59. ...

Nick Markovich scored nine points, made five steals, and grabbed five rebounds to lead Basha to the 5A-I Central Region title with a 40-39 win over Desert Vista. The Bears (18-9) got 11 points from Blake Nash.

Mike Proctor led Desert Vista (22-5) with 13 points.
