... and by the way, that is EXACTLY why the far right is jumping through hoops to keep this initiative off the ballot. The know their extreme candidates would be in big trouble.10 months ago
Dale - you are incorrect in stating that Independents cannot vote in the primaries. There are 3 primary ballots: Republican, Democrat and Libertarian. Anyone who is registered as one of those 3 parties can only vote their own party's ballot. However, anyone who is registered as an Independent or as a "no party preference" can call and request the primary ballot of their choice. I called and requested the Republican ballot for the reasons you outlined in the rest of your post. The bad news is that the deadline for Indies to request a ballot was 5:00 p.m. last Friday and only 25,000 or so had done it, which is a shame because Indies are the fastest growing group of registered voters, so to leave them out of the important primaries is a waste.
AZEagle - you may be correct to some degree, however, I can see many races where a "top two" would be ideal. For example, if it were in effect right now, the Maricopa County Sheriff's race would be between Arpaio, Penzone, Rowan and Stauffer. I'm pretty sure the top two would be Arpaio and Penzone. And I'm also pretty sure nearly 100% of the Democrats and 90% of the Independents and "other" would vote for Penzone. WaLa! Arpaio is history. Likewise, in a match up of candidates such as Pearce, Worsley and Gadek, the top two are likely to be Pearce and Worsely. I think Worsley would take Pearce out in a heartbeat. In fact, I think he will take him out in the Primary. But my point is that I wouldn't mind having a choice between a far-right Republican and a more moderate Republican. At least it's a choice.10 months ago
Samkat - you are wrong about that. Most Arizona public officials are blatant about their desire to rid Arizona of illegal immigrants. I hope you are not one of those people that think that Arpaio's television antics are actually EFFECTIVE anti-immigrant tactics.
Arpaio wants one thing and one thing only. Fame. If it won't get him on television with a microphone in front of him, he wants nothing to do with it.
I will be voting for Penzone for Sheriff. We need a sheriff who is actually a law enforcement officer, not a bloated, self-absorbed, corrupt politician.10 months ago
