@sockratties: Do you actually believe that the cost of providing mental health treatment is not worth it?? Universal background checks WILL NOT stop criminals from obtaining guns. Why did the government (i.e. Democrats) pass laws to prevent anyone from having access to mental health records (such as the current background checks)??
The mental health records are already being kept, but thanks to our illustrious elected officials, they are being kept under lock and key to protect the mentally ill. If the BATF had access to those records while conducting the background checks, mentally ill people would not be able to walk in and buy a gun - period. True, they may be able to obtain them on the black market or by stealing them (both scenarios would not be prevented by ANY background check), but that would at least slow them down a little.
Until we place our focus on the PEOPLE who commit these crimes and not the TOOL they use, then this carnage will continue. Even if they were to completely ban firearms and forcefully take them from the people, the criminals would still be able to obtain them.
Stop falling for the hype - all of the proposed legislation will do nothing to prevent these killings.1 month ago
Universal background checks will do NOTHING to prevent gun violence. This country is seriously lacking in mental health treatment and that is where the problem lies. No criminal obeys the existing gun laws - why would they obey any new ones??
Who is going to pay for this universal background check system?? How long will the records be kept?? Who is going to keep the records?? There are so many unanswered questions about legislation that will not prevent a single gun related killing.
Universal background checks are nothing more than a feel good smoke screen to divert attention away from the real problems in this country. Do not fall for the hype - it will lead to eventual universal registration - which will lead to worse things.

Too bad, Mayor Smith. The current system is so antiquated and unfair to businesses that it needs to be scrapped. The burden of figuring out what is owed falls on the business owner, who then receives a paltry .25 percent 'accounting fee'. What a load of garbage. Simplify the system so that business owners are not overburdened by it.2 months ago
Wow. 2.5 cents. Really?? Let me know when it drops at least a dollar. Why does the media try to sugar coat how badly we are being ripped off at the pump?2 months ago
The food isn't all that great there and the prices are WAY out of line. The last two restaurants at that location have failed, so I fully expect this one to as well.3 months ago
Any purchase of a firearm at a gun show from a licensed dealer requires a background check. Private individuals can purchase firearms from another private individual with no background check - just like all private sales elsewhere. There is no 'gun show loophole' as is touted by opponents of firearms.
There is nothing wrong with these gun shows. If you start trying to restrict or eliminate constitutional rights (rights that are, by the way, not granted by the constitution, but protected by it), where does it end?? This is a very slippery slope to start down.
If the government spent all the time and money they waste trying to restrict firearms on mental health issues, this country would be much better off. Criminals will ALWAYS obtain firearms no matter how much you restrict law abiding citizens right to own them. No amount of gun laws or restrictions will ever change that.4 months ago
To heck with that third world cesspool. Nothing but crime and corruption in Mexico. I am tired of seeing neighborhoods taken over by illegals - they trash them. Mexico is only doing this because they do not want to lose the money that is sent home by illegal immigrants - period. They do not care at all for the rule of law. And for them to state that it is a matter for the federal government - hogwash.
Arizona has an international border and has the RIGHT to protect itself from invasion when the federal government turns a blind eye. Governor Brewer should order the Arizona National Guard to the border in a military role - then let's see what Mexico has to say about it.5 months ago

Ahh, yes, another rate increase. The company is currently sitting on $50 million in profit, but they need another rate increase. Perhaps they should start cutting back on all the platinum benefits packages that are being paid throughout the entire company.
Everyone else has to learn to cut back, but not SRP. I think it is time for the ACC to start telling all the big power companies in Arizona (SPR, APS, TEP, etc.) that they will not receive another rate increase until they can prove that they have started cutting costs.
We also need to go after the legislature for mandating that they get a certain percentage of their power from 'renewable' resources. All that did was increase the cost of electricity by forcing the use of technology that is still WAY too expensive. Solar and wind can only be used for supplemental power - base power still needs to come from nuclear, hydro, coal, and natural gas. Yes, we should start phasing in supplemental power in the form of solar (wind if only absolutely necessary, as the windmills are ugly, noisy, dangerous to fowl), but we need to wait until the price comes down.8 months ago
@fae4now - What does donating money have to do with politics?? Are you saying that Intel only donated the money because it was politically expedient for them to do so?? What does that say about the company?? Charitable giving should be done regardless of any political advantage you might gain from it. 8 months ago
