That's right, jstack, the REAL cost of nuclear is far more than the cost of fuel. And considering the costs of taking care of waste and cleaning up mishaps... nuclear power is just too expensive for the world to afford.
I wrote an MA thesis (turned down though!) called "Should We Permit a Cholera of Soviet-Designed Nuclear Power Plants To Erupt Worldwide?" (That was just too radical for my university advisor to accept!) After my research on that, I was firmly convinced I did not want to see further proliferation of Soviet-designed plants and also prefer not to see more plants built like the ones we've already got. Too many flaws and weaknesses.
In a nutshell, nuclear isn't the answer, coal is not the answer. Oil and gas must be phased out. Renewable sources are not perfect, they certainly require more research, but the payoffs are going to be enormous.
Mr. Stump, especially if you have children, I truly fear you are going to regret your decisions this week and your other positions on the environment. This is not the way to take care of the Earth that we will pass on to our kids. Good stewards do not behave like this, despoiling and polluting. It does not bode well for you politically either. The pool of people in Arizona who share my point of view is growing; the reactionaries like you are on the wane. Thank goodness. I hope it will not be too late before we can change course.
