For me, the question is not whether we should trust the Government...rather, it's should we continue to delude ourselves that government is trustworthy.
The same internet that gives us the power to discover anything we wish to know, is just as potentially the source of our losing the ability to discern knowledge, from propaganda.
The same people who control who we vote for, proscribe for us our limitations of freedom, within a subset of a sense of "nation".
We have already lost the struggle for our freedom, at least in the physical, economic, and political realm. The question is, will we submit to the tyranny which threatens our hearts and minds, as well?
Only time will tell...

Ateam1, I know of whom you speak. I also have a pretty good idea of why they were doing the multiple posts, although they were mistaken about who was deleting them.
I also know there are a lot more people who post on here, that shouldn't be allowed on the site, at all. And wouldn't be, if the EVT even did a cursory look once in a while, at the posts on here.
So, here we are...monitored by robots, for our words, and ourselves, for our attitudes and respectful disagreements.
I guess one outta three ain't bad... [beam]14 hours ago
I said where was the outrage, when the Patriot Law was passed. No mention of Bush, although, I'll grant you, implied.
I also said that it was supposed to be a "temporary" thing, but now--(notice the word now?) it's become the law of the land. That's certainly no ringing endorsement of Obama.
I did not say that we needed the NSA peeking in to everything in our lives. I said that we do, it's obvious, and it has very little to do with Obama, because it's been going on for many, many years. Again, it's systemic, not partisan...both parties have been complicit in this...
But, please, continue with the Obama rants...myopia is useful, for those who nitpick, and spin.15 hours ago
mnj, I don't know where you got that I was making excuses for the current administration here. If anything, it was the opposite...
It's actually you who are so obsessed with Obama, that you can't even discuss a topic, without his being the chief antagonist and principle plotter of evil schemes, within said topic.
You are as bad as those you excoriate for bringing up Bush, ad nauseum. These problems are systemic, not partisan. Even Libertarians can see that!Yesterday
So, EVT doesn't monitor their own opinion section: it's all up to us...that's a scary thought!
Strange letter, Mr. bfera...you thank us, for posting, tell us that you have an automatic system for abuse, then throw the user agreement at us, all at once!
And still, most of us don't know that, by simply clicking on the report option of someone's post, it will be automatically deleted, without so much as a cursory glance, by someone hosting the site! And, you wonder why some are posting mutliple posts, all over?
What a strange place it must be, to work at the EVT...I see cars parked there every day. Does anyone actually drive them?Yesterday
We allowed whatever restraints that agencies like the NSA had on them, to be taken off, with the passing of the Patriot Act.
I find it more than ironic that people are surprised by this, or, even more so, that they are outraged. Where was the outrage, when this Orwellian-named law was passed?
It was drowned out, in the din of saber-rattling reactionary anger, at those who would attack us, on our own soil. What was supposed to be a temporary extension of war time powers, has now become the everyday law of the land.
We are, and will continue, to pay the price, for our security. The real question is, who stands to gain, and who to lose?
When we let the terrorists dictate our freedom, in this way, they have won, without having to do much of anything beyond an attack every few years. Attacks which, by the way, are not preventable, until every single human on the planet is monitored by big brother, from inception to the grave...mark of the beast, indeed...2 days ago
Food stamps...yes, there's more people getting them...there's more people, period. There's more poverty, more low wage jobs, and less middle class. But, by all means, let's attack something like food stamps, which just keeps the freeloaders, you know, alive, and stuff.
Some posters here feel that people are taking advantage of some "largesse" of the government. That's still a very small percentage of those who actually need the program, for survival.
News flash--$10 an hr. is only a livable wage, if one lives in an extended family situation (overcrowded house/slum apt.), or has another full-time job, at that rate of pay. It's enough to either pay the rent, or buy food...not both--either!
But, yeah, they are career "takers", right? The gall of some people!

I don't know where Mr. Ross gets his numbers from, but I seriously doubt they reflect anything remotely factual. The Patriot Act is, obviously, a continuing abrogation of our freedom. It was passed, as a reaction to 9/11, and it was wrong then, as well as now. Any figures quoted, as to how it's used, cannot be accurate, because no one in government has to supply them.
The "listening in" was also brought up, in 2006, btw. Strange how the outcry seems louder now...
The "facts" remain that the government has far-reaching powers to detain anyone, anytime, for no reason (national security is the blank check we've written to them), and with no due process.
I submit that Obama didn't lie, when he said he'd get rid of the Patriot Act (if he indeed, said so), or Gitmo. He was simply over-stepping his bounds, without the inside information on who actually gets to make his decisions for him. The transition team forgot to tell him, about the rules!
No President gets to do anything, outside of the first 100 days. And, even those first 100 days they usually only get 1 big issue to push through.
After that, it's all window dressing, for the public...5 days ago
Obama will only be impeached, if the people writing the script say so...
Personally, I think it will be more like Boehner waking up from a dream, and realizing his Party is dead.
However, we're only in the second act, of this comedy/farce...
