Alice Cooper’s 13th annual Christmas Pudding is going heavy on the metal — and will be sealed with a KISS.
To compensate for a lack of change at the top of the boys basketball landscape as the 2012-2013 season begins, the girls basketball world might pick up the slack.
The 2013 Highland Thanksgiving girls basketball tournament begins this week (Nov. 25-27, 29-30) at Highland and Mesquite high schools in Gilbert.
High School Cross Country State Championship meet
Here are the first-round and quarterfinal matchups for the Division I through Division V volleyball state tournaments:
Division I, Section I
A 1-over-par round of 73 would suggest the final round of high school golf for Austin Stadeli was fairly mundane and steady. Maybe even a little bit boring.
With only a couple weeks remaining until the badminton team and individual state tournaments (Oct. 18-19 for individuals; Oct. 28 for team championships), one of the final wider-scale tournaments takes place this weekend.
Behind the strong right arm of quarterback Emanuel Gant and his bevy of weapons, Tempe High dominated the third quarter Friday night and blew open what was a close game before coasting to a comfortable victory.

The annual Westwood Tournament of Champions is one of the top volleyball tournaments of the season. The tournament runs Friday through late Saturday afternoon, and features several elite programs among the 37 schools.
The Buffaloes have been very impressive in the two games since running back Kam’ron Johnson returned from suspension. Tempe scored 51 points in a win over Flagstaff Coconino and 69 in a victory over McClintock to move to 3-0 on the year. Quarterback Emanuel Gant leads the East Valley with 1,022 passing yards through three games and has 10 touchdowns against only two interceptions. Johnson has 249 rushing yards in only two games while wide receiver Massiah Smith already has 407 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Thunderbird won a state championship three years ago but is not the same team without star running back Kani Benoit, who graduated after last season and went to Oregon. The Chiefs will have a hard time slowing down the high-powered Buffaloes offense in this one.
Prediction: Tempe 41, Thunderbird 17

10. Higley 5-3...
9. Shadow Ridge 8-2...
8. Tempe 9-1...
7. Canyon del Oro 9-1...
6. Sabino 8-2...
Only No. 10 Higley lost in Week 10, and while it was the Knights’ second consecutive loss, those losses came against Saguaro and Williams Field, respectively, and without its starting quarterback. Higley stays over (especially) Phoenix Thunderbird, Phoenix Washington or Catalina Foothills, all three of which can make claims for that No. 10 spot.
Two East Valley quarterbacks dominated the headlines this summer.
Campo Verde 37, Thunderbird 13
10. Paradise Valley 2-0
9. Sahuaro 1-1
8. Apollo 1-1
7. Campo Verde 3-0
6. Ironwood Ridge 1-1
Paradise Valley enters the rankings after a shootout win over North Canyon. Sahuaro drops a spot after a loss to Sabino, while Apollo gets back in with an impressive victory over Ironwood Ridge. Campo Verde continued its strong start by defeating Thunderbird and has moved up to No. 7. Ironwood Ridge is down three spots to No. 6.
The move up from Division III to Div. II continues to go smoothly for Campo Verde, as the Coyotes cruised to a 37-13 victory over Thunderbird Friday night in Gilbert. The Coyotes have outscored their opponents 139-19 on the season, on their way to a perfect 3-0 mark.

Campo Verde has shot out of the gates with a 3-0 record, including an impressive 37-13 win over Thunderbird on Friday. The Coyotes have outscored their opponents 139-19 behind a tough defense and third-year quarterback Luke Pineda. Gilbert has started 0-2, losing a close one to Mesquite and then getting crushed by Desert Ridge. The Tigers badly need to win this game or else the season could begin to unravel. Campo Verde, meanwhile, hopes to keep moving up the Division II rankings with another win.
Prediction: Campo Verde 24, Gilbert 10
