LOS ANGELES — In a world of on-demand video and movies shrunken to the size of smartphone screens, home-entertainment releases need something special to stand out. The following box sets offer more than movies for every cinephile on your holiday list.
Wesley Payne’s right ankle was taped, his gait was altered and the pain was persistent, but his mentality mirrored that of Mountain Pointe’s season.
Of the top four seeded teams in the Division I playoff bracket, it looked like No. 4 Desert Ridge might have the toughest first-round assignment in facing No. 13 Desert Mountain.
Daryl Washington, who made the Pro Bowl last season and led the Cardinals with 9 sacks, returns from a four-game suspension Sunday.
Parenting involves countless mundane decisions — dozens a day. But as any parent knows, the potential for tragedy stemming from a wrong decision is never far from the surface of the mind. What if they go out and get hit by a car? What if I look away and they drown in the current? What if they get kidnapped?
Three male high school students were hospitalized Tuesday morning after taking cold medicine while at school.
The Buffaloes have been very impressive in the two games since running back Kam’ron Johnson returned from suspension. Tempe scored 51 points in a win over Flagstaff Coconino and 69 in a victory over McClintock to move to 3-0 on the year. Quarterback Emanuel Gant leads the East Valley with 1,022 passing yards through three games and has 10 touchdowns against only two interceptions. Johnson has 249 rushing yards in only two games while wide receiver Massiah Smith already has 407 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Thunderbird won a state championship three years ago but is not the same team without star running back Kani Benoit, who graduated after last season and went to Oregon. The Chiefs will have a hard time slowing down the high-powered Buffaloes offense in this one.
Prediction: Tempe 41, Thunderbird 17

"Mad Men" meets "The Artist" in "Populaire," a superbly crafted, finely acted but somewhat shallow retro rom-com about a young French secretary who, with the help of her highly persuasive boss, hammers her way to becoming one of the fastest typists on the planet.
Automotive engineers and designers often have trouble seeing eye-to-eye. Artists rarely sip coffee with scientists, and jocks never sit at lunch tables with the nerds. It’s stereotypical, but it’s difficult to deny. Local Motors, a Chandler-based vehicle company and think tank, is looking to change that.
FILE - This publicity file photo provided by Subaru shows the 2014 Subaru Forester, well known as a durable and eminently functional compact sport utility vehicle, adds more power, more room, more safety features and a retuned suspension for 2014. The new, fourth-generation Forester also has higher fuel economy ratings than its predecessor, 24 miles per gallon in city driving and 32 mpg on the highway with base, 170-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and fuel-efficient continuously variable transmission (CVT). Tucson — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs wrongly paid out at least $67,000 to Pima Community College in Tucson last year because the college did not promptly notify the agency when student veterans quit school or flunked out, according to newly released records.
Red Mountain committed 11 penalties and three turnovers (it fumbled two other times but recovered them), and still hung with Pinnacle until late in last week’s loss to the Pioneers. Brennen Dobson (pictured) had 239 yards passing and 120 yards rushing against Pinnacle. The Lions showed they can move the ball, but Westlake has typically been a strong defensive team in California circles. Westlake (1-1) won its opening game against Waipahu (Hawaii) and lost to Canyon (Calif.), 23-16, last week. On that Hawaii trip, however, several players were involved in an altercation which led to police being involved and subsequent suspensions of last week’s games, including a handful of starters. Their availability is unknown for this week which is a significant question mark here.
Prediction: Westlake (Calif.) 21, Red Mountain 17

If you’re seeing a lot of orange this summer, it’s not only because of East Valley residents sporting a summer tan, but also because residents may be getting the self-proclaimed “best one-hour workout in the country” at Orangetheory Fitness.
Jordan Rezac usually gets in and out of cuts without much trouble.
“I guess it is probably OK for (Alex Rodriguez) to appeal his well-deserved suspension. However, I believe that, should he lose his appeal (meaning he ends up with any suspension at all, even if only one game), the Yankees should forfeit all games he participates in after August 4, 2013. So if they win the World Series, they have to give it back.”
Toni Collette is not exactly a disinterested party. She does, after all, star in "The Way, Way Back."
It’s been more than eight years since Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Rafael Palmeiro and the rest of the original ‘Roid Pack marched in front of Congress and said, in order: (a) I just want to move forward, (b) I don’t understand English and (c) I’ve never taken anything (insert finger wag here) during some of the most uncomfortable programming in C-SPAN history.
As sympathetic, methodical ghostbusters Lorraine and Ed Warren, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson make the old-fashioned haunted-house horror film "The Conjuring" something more than your average fright fest.
Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity members officials were recently informed that their recognition as a fraternity chapter at Arizona State University has been revoked.
First thing’s first: Even though he had no possible reason to want to hit Dodgers instant-living-legend Yasiel Puig with a 2-0 lead and no one on in the sixth inning last Tuesday, Arizona’s Ian Kennedy put a pitch where you just don’t put a pitch in today’s baseball.
A social-conscience espionage film that has actually thought about its "eco-terrorism" themes beyond figuring out how to mine them for suspense, "The East" sends a straight-laced overachiever undercover with a violent eco-vigilante group. Zal Batmanglij and cowriter/star Brit Marling deliver a consistently tense, morally alert story that has plenty of box-office appeal.
Though it opened more than 50 years ago in England, Agatha Christie’s classic murder mystery, set in a large London guest house, still provides thrilling entertainment.
Tired of waiting for action, Gov. Jan Brewer forced lawmakers back to the Capitol late Tuesday to approve her budget and Medicaid expansion.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the Arizona law enforcement head who led the way for local police across the country to take up immigration enforcement is reconsidering his crackdowns — and other law enforcement officials who followed his lead are expected to eventually back away, too.
