  • article Spake: My Reflection on the 85th Academy Awards

    Thursday, February 28, 2013 2:51 pm

In recent years, there have been some really good Oscar hosts like Hugh Jackman, some acceptable hosts like John Stewart, some disappointing hosts like Steve Martin & Alec Baldwin, and some flat-out horrendous hosts like James Franco & Anne Hathaway. Despite the best efforts of some, none have come close to capturing the same wit, timing, and showmanship of reoccurring hosts like Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, or Billy Crystal. At the 85th Annual Academy Awards ceremony however, Seth MacFarlane of “Ted” and “Family Guy” emerged as the single most entertaining first-time Oscar host of the 21st century.

George Orwell, in his “1984” book, used the word “groupthink” to mean the making of sheep-like decisions as a group while discouraging individual thought. Well, here’s an antonym I call “Reverse-Think,” meaning to NOT think like the group.

    Wednesday, November 7, 2012 4:00 pm

On a recent Sunday afternoon, while checking out some football sandwiched in between the mandatory first, second and third quarter naps on the sofa, I became acutely aware that the pre-Christmas marketing blitz is in full swing and is designed to convince you that trying to live without a certain product would be a huge, life-altering mistake. This particular Sunday, it seemed the focus was on the latest portable electronic devices to include tablets, laptops and phones.

    Friday, October 12, 2012 5:00 pm

It is said that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. If that is true, there must be a global love affair with Apple products of epic proportions. My longtime readers know I have mixed feelings about the sensibility of paying the higher prices charged for anything that begins with an i, but I also feel the “i” products have changed the way we work and play. Just a few years ago, we had one computer for the whole house and that was loaded with the latest and greatest software that would allow us to use email, surf the Internet at a blazing 56K/second speed and possible create a birthday card for Aunt Gladys. These days everyone walks around with a personal computer in their hand that also takes phone calls.

Two tech titans are squaring off in federal court Monday in a closely watched trial over control of the worldwide smart phone and computer tablet markets. Apple Inc. filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics Co. last year alleging the world’s largest technology company’s smart phones and computer tablets are illegal knockoffs. Samsung countered that it’s Apple that is doing the stealing and, besides, some of the technology at issue such as the rounded rectangular designs of smart phones have been industry standards for years. Tuesday, March 13, 2012 6:00 pm

I love watching “Seinfeld!” I can watch the same episode numerous times and never get tired of it. I especially like how they develop certain characters and phrases. One of my favorite phrases is “one of those guys” who do or say certain things that brand them as different from George and Jerry, such as a guy who can walk right up to a complete strange girl and ask her out. George and Jerry could never do that because they were not “one of those guys.”
