Since opening for the 1983-84 school year, Westwood High School’s pep level has been punched up a notch by its mascot, the Warrior. A crowd riser tasked with perking up the student body at events ranging from football games to pep rallies, the Warrior gets some help these days from a second mascot; the school added the War Eagle to its arsenal of enthusiasm to bring even more excitement to game days. Campo Verde staved off a furious McClintock rally for a 15-12 road victory Tuesday. Shortstop Paige Hess led Campo Verde with a 4-for-5 day with two doubles and four runs. Riley Herman, Destinee Martinez, Haley Johnston, Tori Sims and Victoria Eccleston each had two hits for Campo Verde. Naomi Martinez came on in the seventh inning to record the save. The force has been strong with Jedi Jack Welch in his two-year fight against leukemia. The name comes from his love of the popular film franchise, and his family and friends have used the little Jedi’s love of all things “Star Wars” to rally around him in his fight against cancer.
300: Rise of an Empire is both a prequel and a sequel to the 2007 film, 300, one of the most stylized action films ever made. The new movie has the same gritty and dark HD tonal quality of the first movie, as well as the sporadic ultra-slow-motion effects that capture the exaggerated battles and blood-spilling in extreme detail; but it’s missing some of the heart from often copied original.
Most teams are in trouble when the captain and four-year starter at point guard goes down with a season-ending knee injury to begin the second game of the season. Not Gilbert Christian. The Knights plugged in a freshman, played defense, rediscovered their footing a few times along the way, and staged a couple bigtime comebacks in the state tournament to win the Div. IV state championship and second title in four years. Freshman Lauryn Satterwhite became the team’s point guard after Colleen Young suffered torn ligaments during the Queen Creek tournament to begin the season, and Meg van Rijn, Alyssa Elias and Cassidy Curtner rallied the girls. All five of the team’s losses came against teams in higher divisions, and the Knights used a 13-2 run to end the game and erase a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat St. David, 32-30, and win the championship.
In the U.S., more than two-thirds of the class of 2011 was not proficient in math. In Arizona, that number jumped to 3 out of 4 students.
McClintock (6-3-1) scored three runs in the 10th inning to beat Maricopa. Junior shortstop Mary Mentz's double scored senior center fielder Karina Hidalgo with the the go-ahead run, and senior pitcher Shealynn Zimnick followed one out later with a two-run single, scoring Andi Blodgett and Mentz with insurance runs. It was McClintock's third victory this season coming in its final at-bat, having previously topped El Paso Franklin and Bushland, Texas, in the Fox Country Girls Fast Pitch Tournament in El Paso. McClintock also put up two runs in the seventh inning Tuesday to rally from a 2-1 deficit, but surrendered the tying run in the bottom of the inning, sending the game to extra innings. Mentz led McClintock, going 4 for 5 with two doubles and a triple, while Zimnick was 3 for 4 with a double and a walk. She also improved her record in the circle to 5-2, striking out eight. Maricopa got two hits apiece from Madison Byrd, Madison Moncel and Vickie Andrade while playing stellar defense.
Protesters rally against SB 1062 in Phoenix. Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed the bill that would have allowed businesses to not serve clients if it went against their spiritual beliefs. [Dominic Valente/East Valley Tribune]
For years Cathi Herrod and her Center for Arizona Policy have flexed their political muscles and pushed through legislation that represented what she calls “fundamental principles,” often those espoused in the Bible.
Do you believe a photographer who identifies as homosexual should be punished for refusing to photograph an event celebrating the Westboro Baptist Church’s hateful ideas? Do you believe a Jewish printer should be threatened for declining to promote a conference criticizing Israel? Do you believe a pacifist should be coerced to paint pro-war posters for a rally? If you believe all these are wrong, you should support Arizona’s SB 1062—because that’s what the bill’s about rather than the things you may have heard.
Tyler Dumas had a speech going in his head.
“If dozens of skilled teachers and administrators are suddenly bolting from the Gilbert Public Schools, parents are loudly protesting, the interim superintendent throws up his hands to quit early because these people can’t be helped, and if a forceful demand for your resignation is met with standing ovations and cheers from an overflowing board room, then it is time to take the high road. Step away from the dais, and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”
A layoff has done the Hamilton girls basketball team good.
The easy, popular, and most plausible case to be made for the Division I boys basketball champion is, again, Corona del Sol. Everyone will be chasing the Aztecs in this final week of the state tournaments, everyone still playing knows and acknowledges as such, and Corona has proven any number of cases to be made why they can win a third consecutive state title.

About 45 percent of Americans usually make New Year’s resolutions, according to a survey from the University of Scranton. But the same survey shows that only 8 percent of us actually keep our resolutions. Perhaps this low success rate isn’t such a tragedy when our resolutions involve things like losing a little weight or learning a foreign language. But when we make financial resolutions — resolutions that, if achieved, could significantly help us in our pursuit of our important long-term goals — it’s clearly worthwhile to make every effort to follow through.
