So we’re two weeks out from the latest gun massacre, and we’ve heard a lot about how to quell the next one.

Just before Christmas we had a guest in our home. A young man who is a U. S. Army staff sergeant, a soldier, an infantryman who has led men in combat on the fields of battle in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was passing through on his way to his latest tour of duty in Afghanistan where people want to kill him. He’s been to war a half-dozen times now since he enlisted a dozen years ago after graduating from high school. Going to war has been his adult life.

Chandler will expand a program for first-time homeowners by using $707,000 in federal funding.

An orientation session for people interested in buying a foreclosed home through a Chandler land trust is slated for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, at Hartford Elementary School, 700 N. Hartford St.

The Gun Lobby points out, cars kill more. To save lives and property, Vehicles are registered. Insurance is required. Inspections and limit auto of use and abuse for public safety.

With the recent Newtown tragedy we are again forced to look at the question of our current gun control legislation. We have lost count of the victims of these horrific events and yet they continue. How can we accept the approximately 30,000 deaths each year from firearms (murders, suicides and accidents) without it screaming to us that “Enough is enough”! Have we become so immune to these events that it doesn’t matter any more? That is almost the equivalent of the U.S. Vietnam dead repeated every year.

Chandler is holding a workshop Aug. 24 on its first-time homebuyer program, which so far has helped 11 families purchase houses in the city.

Three workshops about Chandler's First Time Homebuyer's Program will be held this summer from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. June 29, July 27 and Aug. 24 at the Chandler Community Center, Room 205, 125 E. Commonwealth Ave.
