Word has spread that Monsterland, the monster-movie-themed restaurant/night club in downtown Mesa, will reopen Aug. 24. Details are few, but updates will come via the venue’s Facebook page.

Screening the film adaptation of George Orwell’s “1984” isn’t exactly the most festive way to celebrate one’s upcoming birthday, but after reading the Tribune’s “Nerdvana” column’s recommending it this coming Friday, I couldn’t help but reserve a seat.

For me, the only thing better than a good time-travel movie would be an actual time machine (Come on scientists – get with it!), so I was very excited when I saw the trailer for the new time-tweaking action flick, Looper. But nothing could have prepared me for how incredibly amazing this film turned out. This movie is so much more than it appears on the surface and an instant sci-fi classic has been born.

The new film Dredd 3D follows a day-in-the-life of the post-apocalyptic Mega City One’s most famous judge, jury and executioner - Judge Dredd. But the new movie is more of a gritty re-envisioning of the comic-book source material and a direct remake of Sylvester Stallone’s Judge Dredd from 1995.

When considering iconic fictional couples, there are only a few who immediately come to mind whose relationship has stood the test of time. CopperCon 32, sponsored by the Central Arizona Speculative Fiction Society, will be Aug. 31 to Sept. 3 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Avondale. Advance tickets sales have ended, so memberships cost $55 at the door. Youths 7-12 get in for half price and children 6 and younger are free.

On Friday, five live bands and more than 70 booths will line Main Street in Mesa to celebrate the best of sci-fi geekdom. There will be costume contests, panel discussions, concept art and comic drawing workshops, strategy gaming contests, science and technology demonstrations by HeatSync Labs, a screening of “The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension” and a ticket giveaway for William Shatner’s upcoming appearance at the Mesa Arts Center.
