  • article Letter: The Goose and Gander of arms control

    Sunday, January 27, 2013 2:37 pm

Notice that General Stanley McChrystal does not support private use of assault weapons. And Stan is the authority on counter terrorism. I was on active duty for seven years, was Unit Property Book officer for 5 years in three different units during which time I held all of my units’ weapons locked up safe and secure in my unit arms rooms. So perhaps our Constitution does permit Congress to require that all civilians who would chose to own military style weapons to secure them in a “well regulated” militia’s arms room! Five weapon safes cost less than $300. If that’s good for the active duty geese, it ought to be good for the ganders, too.

  • article Letter: 2nd Amendment designed to fight tyrannical governmentSuns in a ‘very bad place’

    Tuesday, January 22, 2013 2:43 pm

Despite some contemporary opinion, there is no historical evidence, except for a bit of Thomas Jefferson’s political writings, that the Second Amendment to the Constitution was designed to ensure that Americans could, if necessary, rise to remove a tyrannical government.

  • article Letter: Does Arizona GOP not understand the crisis?Nation’s leaders created 2nd amendment for 1776, not 2013

    Wednesday, January 16, 2013 7:59 am

Let’s face it, the nation’s founders didn’t create the Second Amendment to allow people to kill defenseless, unarmed school children.

  • article The Vent: Jan. 9

    Wednesday, January 9, 2013 11:49 am

“Oh, the NHL lockout is over. And just when I had almost completely forgotten about hockey...”

  • article Letter: Durst's gun control column mistaken

    Sunday, December 30, 2012 3:15 pm

About Will Durst’s mistaken column about gun control and Senator Diane Feinstein’s rants about assault rifles — what does the 2nd Amendment have to do with hunting or target shooting? Nothing. What does it have to do with citizens defending themselves against a government-controlled militia? EVERYTHING! Just ask the successful Viet Cong, the Cambodian Khmer Rouge, the Taliban, and lots of other grassroots insurgencies. The Founding Fathers knew that, and so do a high percentage of US voters.

  • article Letter: Every citizen is free to fight with own weapons

    Monday, December 24, 2012 7:31 am

In reply to John K. Walker’s letter concerning the Second Amendment.

  • article The Vent: Dec. 21

    Friday, December 21, 2012 9:13 am

“Social Security and Medicare are NOT entitlements. I involuntarily paid via taxation into these programs for almost 50 years so that I may receive the benefits I do now. Entitlements are handouts such as food stamps, WIC, rent subsidies, and free medical care given to people simply because the have the good fortune of living in this country.”

  • article Letter: ‘Feel good’ laws just won’t work

    Thursday, December 20, 2012 6:34 pm

It’s time for sensible gun control. A requirement to pass a test and score a minimum score with a pistol and a rifle to graduate from high school. The government to start to regulate the militia, with training and a yearly camp. You can’t just ban guns because prohibition doesn’t work except in reverse. You can live in a society where no one can shoot twenty kids before someone shoots him. Get sensible and control weapons by being sure that everyone knows them, and every member of the militia has one.

  • article Letter: How about balance with gun control?

    Tuesday, December 18, 2012 6:32 pm

Folks, I don’t advocate the total repeal of the Second Amendment, but can we please put it in perspective? Can there be a balance between that right and the “inalienable” right of those children in Connecticut to life and the pursuit of happiness?

  • article McCarthy: 'Fists' feels like lavish vanity project

    Monday, November 5, 2012 1:30 pm

A boiling pot of wild martial arts moves culled from dozens (maybe hundreds) of violent Asian action extravaganzas as sifted through a Tarantino-esque fanboy prism, "The Man With the Iron Fists" feels like both a lavish vanity project and an earnest attempt to deliver a compendium of cool hand-to-hand combat set pieces.

  • article A new 'Revolution' from sci-fi mogul J.J. Abrams

    Friday, October 5, 2012 9:59 am

"There is an inherent evil to the wondrous technology that we embrace blindly," says J.J. Abrams. It's a loaded observation that seems simultaneously quizzical, thrilled and circumspect. And it hints at the world view of Abrams, the alliteratively initialed writer-director-producer whose latest series, "Revolution," airs Mondays at 10 p.m. EDT on NBC.

  • article Letter: Why kind of country do you want?

    Wednesday, August 29, 2012 8:37 am

In reference to the guest commentary by Bob Beane in the Aug. 22 issue: What makes the opinion of the Second Amendment of a bicycle riding accountant worthy of consideration in a guest commentary? Is he an acquaintance of someone on the paper?

  • article Beane: Reducing deaths through sensible gun control is possible

    Monday, August 20, 2012 9:20 pm

I’d like to both agree (on one view) and take issue with Susan Stamper-Brown’s Guest Commentary of Aug. 3 (“The Futility of Gun Control”). I find several of her views to be very closed-minded and illogical, as I do those of many people who advocate no attempt at sensible gun control.

  • article Letter: Misunderstanding of second amendment is a new problem

    Thursday, August 2, 2012 9:12 am

The murder rampage in Aurora, Colorado, has caused some to conclude that had more people in the movie theater been armed, perhaps 40 people would have been killed, and that the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution “applies to ONLY those people who are in the militias.”

  • article Stamper Brown: The futility of gun control

  • article Letter: The answer to violence isn’t more violence

    Friday, July 27, 2012 9:12 am

The morons on the Right think the answer to violence in America is to arm more people with guns. The shooting in Aurora, Colorado at the Batman movie premiere is a glaring example of why severe gun control is needed. Everyone beLIEves they can carry a gun. What if someone else had a gun and started shooting in the chaos of that smoke-filled theater. Do we need 40 dead and 100-plus wounded? Twelve or more dead and 50 wounded is too many. The punk had four weapons, one being an assault rifle, tear gas, and a bullet-proof vest. The 2nd Amendment does not apply to every American citizen, unless you are in a militia. Those who love their guns and that 2nd Amendment overlook the militia part. Our founding fathers are most likely turning over in their graves with the direction the Republicans are taking this nation. Our nation is destroying itself through laws that are supposed to protect us. We as a nation — well our politicians on the Right care more about war and the world, than our own people at home. We need to fix our problems before we solve the world’s. Our first fix should be gun control. I’m sure the hate mail will come rolling in if this gets published. So be it. It’s still America, and free speech reigns supreme. Read the 2nd Amendment. Rather, I’ll include it for you all to read. “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

  • article Dupuy: Trust me, you believe in gun control

    Thursday, May 24, 2012 10:37 am

If you ask the typical hyper-political gun owner (and I have ... at Thanksgiving dinner), why it’s important to own a gun, they’ll bark about the Constitution. Yes, the Second Amendment: “The Right of the People to Keep and Bear Arms Shall Not Be Infringed!”

  • article Gilbert community, police still piecing together details of shooting

    Friday, May 4, 2012 5:21 am

For most of Wednesday morning and into the early afternoon, a longtime resident in northwest Gilbert’s Lago Estancia neighborhood noticed something unsettling with her German Shepherd mix. The dog sat at the front door, and growled.
