We highlighted development opportunities and showcased available properties through downtown and along the light rail corridor.
What’s with all the political posturing and saber-rattling by our “desk jockey admirals and generals” in the House and Senate? We see them rabidly calling for everything short of “carpet bombing” Tehran and turning it into another Dresden. Of course, none (or almost none) of the military-aged sons (or daughters for that matter) of these politicians have ever been in or ever will be in the U.S. military and have to fight in the wars that their mommies and daddies vote for.

Thanksgiving is a once a year memorable reminder of the goodness of God in this nation. As we think of our history, the American custom of Thanksgiving transcends cultures and stands as a truly American tradition. The group of Congressmen who are grilling Secretary Sebelius are pushing an agenda that is a little hard to follow. The issue is that some citizens are going to lose their existing health insurance as a result of the Affordable Care Act. In a left-handed way this is correct. The ACA offers policies which have more coverage at lower cost and, accordingly, many insurance companies are canceling policies which have become overpriced and are non-competitive ever since ACA was rolled out. The decisions to cancel certain overpriced policies were made by the insurance companies because it made economic sense. There is little future in offering policies which are not competitive because they have less coverage at higher cost.

When the Republicans talk about “Affordable Heathcare,” one of the options they tout is “Repeal and Replace.” Given their past history, a Republican “Replace” option concerns me more than anything else. Republicans have always prohibited Medicare — the single largest buyer — from attempting to negotiate drug prices, consistent with the pharmaceutical companies’ philosophy that completely unrestrained prices and profits are necessary to fund the risk-taking of research and development. Medicare is required by Congress to accept the pharmaceutical companies’ prices without comparison or negotiation, add 6 percent to it, and pay it. As a perpetual gift to the pharmaceutical companies, when Part D of Medicare was passed in 2003, Congress prohibited Medicare from negotiating altogether. There were some reciprocal gifts from the pharmaceutical companies to the cooperating Congressmen, as might be expected.

The latest piece of extortion by the Republican House over the budget is getting scathing reviews all across the political spectrum. While it easy to blame the tea party for this nonsense the fact is that a substantial portion of the American electorate stubbornly cling to the notion that the intransigence it takes to ruin the nation will somehow save it. Although if you ask them by what practical mechanism is the Republic saved the hemming and hawing begin and finally end in an empty and vacuous rhetoric about freedom and the Constitution interleaved with anti-Obama hate speech. Specifics are hard to come by.
