Despite injuries and a slow start, Desert Ridge pulled off a 38-14 win against Mesa on Friday. To start the game Desert Ridge (7-1) took the ball from Mesa with a squib kick that the Jackrabbits couldn’t cover. The Jaguars would then get on the board on their first play with a 35-yard run by running back JJ Husar.
Another test passed with flying colors for young Desert Ridge and possibly more questions for Mountain View after only week two.
J.J. Husar had a visiting jersey on this time, but he was still right at home.

Luke Rubenzer, Saguaro: The sophomore quarterback carried the Sabercats to a last-second victory against Phoenix Thunderbird, racking up 457 yards of total offense and five touchdowns in a 43-39 come-from-behind victory. Rubenzer finished 22-of-27 for 306 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 151 yards and two touchdowns. He also played safety for Saguaro the entire second half.
Tempe schools (Tempe High and Tempe Prep) have been the only two tests for Seton Catholic most of this season, including last week’s easy win over Chinle in the first round.
Thrust into a starring role in the first round of the playoffs, sophomore Rajhan Meriwether more than performed.
Desert Ridge wide receiver Manny Figueroa was sidelined on Friday night against Red Mountain after getting ejected from last week’s game against Skyline.
It was almost enough to forget the triple-threat offense of the last two seasons. Okay, it’s just one game but sophomore Tarek Morrison did his best to help put behind the memory of Jordan Becerra, Joey Counts and Parker Rasmussen.
