MGM’s “The Wizard of Oz” is the rare film adaptation that has officially become even more cherished than the timeless book that inspired it. Over the years, “The Wizard of Oz” has influenced numerous sequels, prequels, and reimaginings in just about every entertainment medium. Although there have certainly been some good additions to the “Oz” franchise, it’s unfortunate all of them must live in the shadow of an unbeatable classic. While nothing will ever top the Judy Garland version, the most we can ask from a modern “Oz” interpretation is that it remains true to L. Frank Baum’s universe while also sprinkling in something fresh. On that basis, Director Sam Raimi sufficiently delivers in his vibrant and fun “Oz the Great and Powerful.”
If you had told me a month ago that my Oscar predictions would look anything like this, I probably would have advised you to go do a little more research. “Argo” poised for the Best Picture win sans a Best Director nod? Unthinkable. Emmanuelle Riva and Naomi Watts as viable Best Actress contenders against youthful powerhouses like Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain? You’re pulling my leg.
Where everyone else spent most of last January debating which team would be victorious at Super Bowl XLVII, I was busy trying to predict which movies would win big at the 85th annual Academy Awards. In many respects, the Oscars feel like a sporting event as nominees tirelessly campaign to win and award analyzers place bets on which horse will cross the finish line.
It's not really news that Arnold Schwarzenegger is back this year. Everybody else in Hollywood is, too, so why not the former California governor?
Complete list of 85th Annual Academy Award nominations announced today:
In the eight years I’ve taken on the regular duty of reviewing movies, 2012 just might have been the best.
Judging part one of Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" prelude "The Hobbit" is a bit like reviewing a film after seeing only the first act.

It’s called “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” But with director Peter Jackson back at the helm, this 2012 blockbuster figures to be yet another epic along the lines of Jackson’s three “Lord of the Rings” takes.
We race into the 2012 homestretch following a record-breaking Thanksgiving weekend, where blockbuster franchises like “Twilight” and James Bond weren’t the only ones to do gangbuster business. Oscar-heavyweights “Lincoln” and “Life of Pi” both exceeded expectations in wide release, while independent fare “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Hitchcock” saw decent numbers in far fewer theaters.
December will soon be descending upon us. For a lot of people this month will entail building snowmen, sledding down hills of snow, making snow angles and getting tongues stuck to icy poles. Of course those stuck in Ahwatukee won’t be able to appreciate any of these traditional winter activities. But who needs snow when you can spend your Christmas break in a cozy movie theater. Here are several films to look out for this holiday season.
The heralded holiday movie season is marked by big-budget extravaganzas, Oscar hopefuls and family films suitable for post-Thanksgiving or early Christmas viewing and for filling that luxuriously open week (for some lucky workers and students) before New Year’s Day.
Although Stephen Chbosky’s “The Perks of Being A Wallflower” was published in 1999, it remains a popular sensation amongst the high school crowd to this day. A semi-autobiographical, coming-of-age tale, “Perks” follows a teenage boy as he navigates the tumultuous waters that are high school.
The B-list rules Hollywood’s fall and holiday movie season: Bond, Bella and Bilbo.
