Elementary students in the Gilbert Unified School District would have less band and strings time if the district expands a pilot program offered now at three elementary schools.

Many elementary school students have to wait until junior high or high school to get involved in serious drama productions — but not children at Highland Arts Elementary School in Mesa.

Gilbert Unified School District elementary and junior high school registration will be July 6-22. Parents can register their children for the 2010-2011 school year. Registration will be 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Highland Park Elementary School, 230 N. Cole Drive. Families who do not reside within the boundaries of the Gilbert district can complete an open enrollment application at that time as well. To register for any Gilbert elementary or junior high school, bring a child's birth certificate, immunizations record, and a parent or guardian's proof of residency (a utility bill or other bill noting a name and address). High school registration is taking place at the individual campuses, which are open during the summer.

The Queen Creek Unified School District is discussing the planned addition of 10 classrooms at Queen Creek Elementary School at a meeting 10 a.m. to noon Monday at the district office, 20740 S. Ellsworth Road, Queen Creek.

High schools host singing contest

The Gilbert Unified School District board on Tuesday approved the appointments of three principals and an assistant principal for the upcoming school year.

The Higley Unified School District Recreation Basketball Camps at Chaparral and San Tan elementary schools have been canceled this week. Basketball camps still will be offered at Cortina and Coronado elementary schools at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Teachers from several East Valley schools will learn about global climate change during four days of training starting Tuesday.

District governing board meets Tuesday

Coronado Elementary School is hosting a K-8 Literacy Night for parents from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the school, 4333 S. DeAnza Blvd., Gilbert.

The Gilbert Unified School District governing board will discuss start and end times for next school year at a meeting on April 14. The board was to discuss the matter during Tuesday night's meeting, but it was decided earlier to move it to a future agenda.
