Because of the actions of two Paz de Cristo Community Center employees and the quick response of Mesa and Tempe fire departments, the facility that serves as a food bank, social services center and dining hall for the homeless and working poor was spared major damage when flames broke out last week.
United Food Bank is looking for volunteers to help administer a national study that helps food banks have a greater understanding of hunger and the needs of their communities.
According to the Government Accountability Office, the federal government operates 50 different programs for the homeless. There are 23 programs in housing, 26 for food and nutrition, 130 for at-risk youth. They also operate an astounding 342 programs for economic development, which government is notoriously bad at anyway.
Falcon Field Airport will host its fifth annual Open House 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors can get close to aircraft, unique cars, military vehicles and more. Admission and parking are free.
The next Building Strong Neighborhoods Initiative in the City of Mesa will be held in Council District 6. The Desert Sands community and Casa Mia neighborhood will be the focus of the initiative. These neighborhoods are located between 78th and 82nd Streets, north of Baseline Road. The program will kick off with an orientation meeting on 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 21, in the community meeting room at Light In the Desert Church at 7930 E. Baseline Road. District 6 Councilmember Scott Somers is scheduled to speak to neighbors at the meeting.
The Groves Neighborhood is partnering with City of Mesa Neighborhood Outreach for a volunteer-driven citrus collection from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 23. Residents can donate the extra fruit as part of a citywide effort to benefit the United Food Bank.
