I am a mother of a recent college graduate and my frustration with the poor employment prospects for the young has deepened over time. A New York Times editorial entitled, “Where Have All the Raises Gone?” (March 2, 2014), noted the stagnation and decline of American workers’ wages predates the Great Recession. In fact, since 2002 the pay for less educated workers has declined while the salaries of college educated workers has stagnated.
When I was studying to be a rabbi, I spent several years doing volunteer service work in India, Thailand, El Salvador, Ghana, and many other countries. During that time, I heard many wrenching stories from women who had been the victims of violence. They told me they felt powerless, vulnerable, and scared.

Oh no, here we go again. Arizona Republicans will be asked again this year to “hold our noses” and vote for another “centrist, compassionate” (could that possibly mean R.I.N.O.) Republican. The last time it was for Mitt “Hundreds of Millions of Family Trust Fund Dollars squirrel-awayed in so-called ‘off-shore Caribbean Island Nations’ Romney.”
Tom Patterson’s column, “Marriage gap contributes to inequality,” seems to leave out the harsh realities of inequality in America. Tens of millions of Americans struggle to survive economically, while the wealthiest people are doing very well and corporate profits are at an all time high. In fact, wealth and income inequality is greater today than at any time before the great depression. One family now owns more wealth than the bottom 40 percent of Americans. In recent years 95 percent of all new income has gone to the top 1 percent. How can Mr. Patterson say the “key to the whole deal, the most basic explanation of what’s going on is the marriage gap?” Nations will not survive when so few have so much and so many have so little. It has nothing to do with a “marriage gap.”
The Little Sisters of the Poor, who operate a nonprofit hospice and nursing home, as a matter of conscience don’t want to be in the position of providing abortifacients and contraceptives under Obamacare, as most employers are required to do.
President Obama, switching the subject from Obamacare, recently gave a speech describing income inequality as the most significant issue of our time. Advancing inequality “is what drives me”, he said, because it “poses a fundamental threat to American prosperity”.
President Obama will get a break from “Obamacare” when he pardons the traditional Thanksgiving turkey. Each of us can also set aside our cares by pardoning a turkey and choosing a nonviolent Thanksgiving observance — one that gives thanks for our good fortune, health, and happiness with a life-affirming, cruelty-free feast of vegetables, fruits, and grains.
While viewing George and Laura Bush being interviewed on Jay Leno last eve I was reminded, we once had Presidents and First Ladies with class. It was refreshing to recall how they represented our country around the world, with respect and dignity. Two people who can enjoy a joke and face up to negative press.
Advocates for Comprehensive Immigration Reform (English translation: amnesty) like to point out that immigrants in the past have flocked to America and made important contributions to our nation. That’s true, but the America of 1913 was different from 2013 in ways that greatly affect the probability that immigrants will become contributing citizens.
I’ve been watching the fight over the Affordable Care Act and how some are stopping at nothing to shut it down before giving it a chance to work.
Dear American citizens:
“Buy this stock. Based upon conservative talk radio in northern California where they are peeing in their pants over Obamacare, I recommend buying the company that manufactures ‘Depends.’”
Either the American People can believe that Barack Hussein Obama is stupid (Occidental College, Columbia University, Harvard University, past President of the Harvard Law Review, former Visiting Law and Government Fellow University of Chicago, author of four books, former Illinois State Senator, former U.S. Senator and twice elected to be the President of the United States of America) or that he is a liar.
“The congressional gym remains open during the shutdown.”
Arizonans lacking insurance can now begin the process of purchasing their own through the recently opened health insurance marketplace.
So, it’s really happened.
Q: Is the government too big and powerful? Does a one-legged duck swim in circles?
America’s middle class used to be the proud backbone of our economy. They made things, things of value that other people would pay for. Not only did the middle class prosper, they were the driver of America’s emergence as the world’s economic superpower.
Arizona residents will be offered health-insurance plans with some of the lowest premiums in the country when federal insurance marketplaces begin open enrollment Tuesday under Obamacare, the government said Wednesday.
The “Grand Old Peace” party is still just the same ol’ Grand Old Publicity party.
Arizonans looking to buy health insurance on federally run marketplaces opening Oct. 1 now have an idea what a policy will cost.
“It’s that time of year when politicians everywhere live on a food stamp budget for a week and then whine and moan about how hard it was. Guess what? I am not on food stamps, but my family has less than that to spend on food. We eat healthy and do just fine. $29-$47 a week per person for food would be a luxury.”
