What else can you do but chuckle at some of the “letter writers” and their devotion to ridiculous ideas they believe will “save America’ from succumbing to the disease of “socialism?”
In 1912, Congress passed into law our first income tax. It was sold to the American people as a 1-percent flat tax on the wealthy. The IRS became responsible for tax collection. It soon became clear to anyone with substantial knowledge of the tax code that obtaining tax breaks for the wealthy would be a lucrative business. The tax lobbyists in Washington, D.C. were born.
There is no place in a society of free people for a government agency like the IRS. For 80 years it has been used by administrations of both parties to punish their enemies. All citizens are subject to the IRS.
Tax reform has become an important issue in dealing with the recession and job creation. There is a plan now in committee in the House of Representatives referred to as HR 25 and is fair to all Americans. It is the Fair Tax (not the Flat Tax) and is supported by the best economists in our nation. The Fair Tax is a consumption tax of 23 percent on new goods and services and would eliminate the IRS and all taxes associated with that agency such as the income tax, payroll tax, capital gains tax, the alternative minimum tax, corporate tax, estate and gift taxes. The imbedded tax of 22 percent on all new goods would also be eliminated. American workers would receive their full paycheck. The Fair Tax would bring millions of high paying manufacturing jobs back to America, boosting the economy, and improving the standard of living for the poor and middle class and eliminate tax breaks for the wealthy. The poor would pay 0% tax through a rebate program. The Fair Tax is also revenue neutral.
The FairTax is an idea whose time has come. Congress — both House and Senate, Republicans and Democrats — has demonstrated time after time the inability to restrain itself with the public purse. Congress simply can’t govern effectively as long as the income tax is in place. Even the “fiscal crises” legislation passed by the current congress added $74 billion MORE to the deficit; all to favor special interest groups. In order to save America, congress must be denied the instrument of its folly: the income tax. A solution has been filed away in a drawer somewhere by the congress for over 10 years. It’s called The FairTax. It’s neither a Republican nor democrat idea but truly an American idea!
Recently, CNN reported rampant income tax fraud of a new sort. Thieves steal social security numbers then file tax returns on the accounts of these social security numbers. They then receive the refunds that were due honest working citizens. The segment went on to suggest the IRS is not doing its part to curtail such activities.
Arizona legislators may take an in-depth look at the state's tax system, with an eye toward broadening the sales tax while phasing out the individual and corporate income taxes.
