Final scores from Week 3 of the high school football season:
Estrella Foothills 34, Coronado 9
The ACS Rankings didn't have much movement after the 16 games played by Arizona teams in Week O.
Outlook: If but for a play here or a mathematical tweak there, the Coronado football program may be looking at a still-active eight-year playoff streak. Instead, the Dons have sat home during the postseason the past two years, each time finishing No. 17 in the power points of a 16-team field. It’s a driving force at the school, as the seniors still remember the streak when they were freshmen, and now want to start a new one.
Outlook: It’s a whole new crew at Seton Catholic.
5. Snowflake — WR/DB Rick Shumway and Alec Solomon are nearly all that remains from the 2012 semifinalists, and Snowflake should join Show Low among the most difficult schedules in Div. IV (Mingus, Estrella Foothills, Seton Catholic, Blue Ridge and Show Low). Estrella Foothills and Coolidge could also snag this spot.
4. River Valley — An 8-4 team in 2012 returns QB Derek Advocates (1,818 yards, 17 TD, 3 INT; 614 yards rushing, 8 TD), RB Brandon Long (1,296 yards, 16 TD) and more than half of its defense. The schedule isn’t overly difficult so an 8-2 or 9-1 regular season is within reach.
3. Seton Catholic — Perhaps the biggest wildcard in all our division’s rankings, the defending champions return RB Antonio Campanella, Nikko Villegas and little else among significant contributors from 2012. But the Sentinels are always good, and a silver lining could be a manageable schedule (Maricopa, Snowflake and Coolidge).
Here are the East Valley high school varsity football schedules for 2013. This list will be continuously updated.
From mid-May to July, kids from the Kyrene School District are participating in a new program where they get to attend field trips during a full-day camp.
Editor’s note: This is part five of a continuing summer series on the proposed South Mountain Loop 202 Freeway.
