Rebecca Warren: When a close relative or friend starts to display signs of dementia or related neurological ailments, it is a family tragedy requiring speedy action and medical care. But in many cases, the disease comes on gradually, and it becomes evident with inconsistencies in behavior and sometimes, problems with money.

Authorities are seeking help in finding a woman who went missing from her home Monday.

Bob Pheatt moves his hand along the smooth metal. Alvina Alvarez knocks on it with her knuckles. "They had to arc weld that from the inside," Bob says confidently, admiring Tempe artist Gary Slater's stainless steel sculpture in the Scottsdale Civic Center mall.

Gilbert police say a 73-year-old woman with dementia who had been missing since Tuesday has been found in New Mexico.

Sunrise of Chandler Assisted Living, 5757 W. Chandler Blvd., hosts an Alzheimer's and Dementia Support Group from 6 to 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month. Representatives from the Alzheimer's Association lead the meetings along with Sunrise of Chandler coordinators. Food and beverages will be provided.

The Alzheimer’s Association Desert Southwest Chapter is launching a Gilbert support group for caregivers of people with dementia. The group will meet at the First United Methodist Church, 331 S. Cooper Road, from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the first and third Friday of each month.
