Mesa City Councilwoman Janie Thom has retracted her comments about a former Mesa employee to settle his claim against the city.

This year's mayoral election brought up topics of zero-based budgeting, efficiencies in the city, cutting red tape for businesses, and creating a procurement code that's reliable. Now, before the new mayor has even stepped in, some City Council members are taking a deeper look at all of those issues.

A Mesa proposal to eliminate the Downtown Development Committee was strongly opposed by council members Dennis Kavanaugh and Dina Higgins at a meeting last week.

Vote counting ended Thursday in the Chandler City Council run-off election with two new city councilmen.

Mesa Mayor Keno Hawker is accusing a City Council member of making unfounded accusations about illegal council meetings and the conducting of city business in private.

Expressing concerns about the City of Tempe is no longer limited to city council or committee meetings. Tempe City Council Member Joel Navarro is starting a new conversation series, “Java with Joel,” where residents can spend an hour on Saturday morning drinking coffee and discussing city issues. Having been chair of the neighborhood Quality of Life and Revitalization Committee and recently appointed to the new Neighborhoods and Education City Council Committee, Navarro has made neighborhoods the topic of his first 8:30 a.m. community discussion on Oct. 27 at Xtreme Bean Coffee Company, 1707 E. Southern Ave. A schedule of future sessions is currently unavailable, but Navarro said he intends to make to make the community discussions a regular event.

The four newest members of the Gilbert Town Council will be sworn in in a special meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Tens of thousands of Mesa voters will have a new City Council member representing their interests next year as the city redraws district boundaries to reflect a shifting population.
