Being critical of President Obama’s push for a peaceful end to Iran’s Nuclear ambitions is plain ignorant. Our President does not want war. He is giving peace a chance rather than military strikes and another war. If it does not work and Iran fails to abide by the peaceful treaty, we can then act. I do think, however, if Israel feels any type of threat from Iran, they will act anyway and we may not have any say in the conflict.
In response to Mr. Chiazza’s recent letter to the editor (Tribune, Oct. 20, evtnow.com/5z0), I, too, find it quite disturbing that radicals are putting up signs saying “Destroy Public Education.” However, the group that placed these signs are not those who oppose the override. They were placed by people who want the property tax override to pass. They hoped that their deception would cause voters to jump to an inaccurate conclusion, just as Mr. Chiazza did.
The City of Gilbert has an override vote for public education coming up in November. It is quite disturbing that radicals again are putting up signs saying “Destroy Public Education”. Gilbert used to have a very good reputation that citizens of Gilbert were quite proud of. As a 25-year resident I am very disturbed that these radicals that are now in public offices are going to ruin the once outstanding reputation that Gilbert once had.
With another violent mass shooting at the navy yard in D.C. we must again look at why our sick society continues to ignore the grave society gun disease we have in this Country. This recent mass shooting is the result of a ignorant society doing nothing about the problem. This is not a Democratic or Republican political issue nor a right or left issue. It is a disease that is killing many of our Citizens. The bloodshed from gun violence and mental health issues is on all of our hands, since we as voters continue to elect Political Officials that consistently vote against any kind of gun control. We as a society should be saying enough is enough.
I found that going to a Matt Salmon town hall Meeting is a test in real frustration. He tells his constituents what a great job he is doing. Then he proceeds to tell us how he is continuing to fight to “defund” Obamacare, which as we all know is a waste of time and our taxpayer dollars.
In attending and speaking at the Aug. 1 Gilbert Town Council meeting, was appalled at what took place. I was there to speak against an issue of being in compliance with state law in having guns in public buildings. Two council members wanted to have the right for all to be able to arm themselves in public buildings — including the town council chambers.
Anyone that thinks that racism does not exist in this country should now look at reality. Trayvon Martin was an unarmed teenage black man walking to his house in a neighborhood in Sanford, Fla. He was confronted by an armed neighborhood watch patrol who has been previously reporting nothing but innocent black walkers in the neighborhood. George Zimmerman was told not to follow this young teen, yet his racist instinct pushed in that he had to follow him because of nothing else but the color of his skin.
As we mourn the loss of 19 of our courageous Firefighters, we should remember them all as our Navy Seals. They go to the front lines to fight the enemy. Our Navy Seals are the best of the best. The same should be said for our Hotshots that fight these tragic fires in our country. They are on the front line in a war with a deadly enemy. They are our warriors just like the Navy Seals. The Hotshots that died in this tragic fire were in a war fighting for all of us. The Hotshots still up there in that war we have to pray for.
The Supreme Court’s decision has not only put a big hole in the Voter Rights Law, it has also put a big hole in our basics for our Democracy to survive. Congress in 2006 overwhelmingly passed the Voter Rights Act, which made sure our elections were fair and gave the rights for all of our citizens to Vote. To now ask a radical-leaning Congress to rewrite the basics of this law could have nothing but radical and racist conclusions. Far from the democracy our great country is suppose to be.
The state House conservative Republicans now have had a good taste of what it is like to be on the short end of important legislation. Government works best when the two parties compromise. In this case to get the budget and Medicaid expansion passed as Gov. Brewer, House Democrats and smart liberal Republicans wanted. The conservative Republicans in the House and Senate have had the tables turned on them. These same Republicans have for so long in the majority had all things their way. When a few of their own party turn and do the right thing that affects the people of Arizona they cry and complain about it. I am very sure the people of Arizona are very happy to finally see compromise. Through the crying conservatives that did not get their way this time, they got a good taste of their own medicine. Compromise works.
At Congressman Matt Salmon’s Town Hall meeting in Gilbert, I asked him why is he and the rest of his colleagues keep trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obama Care)? It has been tried 37 times now to the tune of $55 million of tax payer dollars! He is wasting time and our money using scare tactics to his constituents that simply are not true. His response was he is going to continue to try to repeal Obamacare. No matter what it takes!! That plainly tells me he does not care about spending taxpayer dollars on something that will not pass and using false pretenses, but yet he is the first one to complain about government waste and spending.
At one time, the community of Gilbert had a great reputation. It had great schools and a proud economic future that led to Gilbert being one of the best communities to live in in the United States.
I feel it has become an embarrassment to the community of Gilbert to have three very radical (Town) Council members. No other neighboring city councils have such radicals that would want to protest federal grants for seniors and the needy.
It is beyond belief that we have a handful of senators that want to filibuster to prevent even a vote on sensible gun control. When 90 percent of America is saying universal background checks are needed now. When over 75 percent of gun owners and NRA members are saying the same thing.
Hats off to the City Of Bisbee! Voting to legalize civil unions within its city Limits speaks volumes for an issue that is not going to go away. Attorney General Tom Horne wants to again waste time and taxpayer dollars on an issue he is going to have a hard time fighting. This is not about gay marriage it is about civil unions. Better yet rights of people that are in civil unions. This again will point to Discrimination something very familiar with the Courts coming from Arizona. Pure rights of citizens of Bisbee that are in civil unions. The State of Arizona will lose again and taxpayer dollars will again be wasted.
It is quite disappointing that we now have a Senator who on the surface seems to understand the need for Universal Background Checks on Gun Sales. This supposedly good friend of Gabby Giffords then votes against it when it comes up for a Vote in the Senate. Mr. Flake obviously had fallen victim to the NRA who now has over 75 percent of it members in favor of Universal Background Checks. I find it very hypocritical that we have a Senator who shines is his smile of friendship to Gabby Giffords on her relentless campaign to get Gun Control legislation passed. At least to get Universal Background Checks passed. Then to have Mr Flake cave in to the failing NRA Lobbyist. This is a tell tale sign Senator Flake is not caring about what the people want but what the extreme lobbyist want. Shame on Senator Flake. Gabby does not need back stabbing friends like that.
I find it quite shameful that the Arizona Tea Party would hold a rally at our state Capitol and call it “.223 Second Amendment Rally.” To have a rally named after one of the guns used in the Sandy Hook Massacre is shameful.
How do we get so lucky to have not one but two Sheriffs that somehow get into the National Media for all the wrong reasons. Yes folks we have Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who has news conferences about the “birther issue,” his posse and his racist raids.
Does Arizona Senate President Andy Biggs and the Majority of the GOP not understand the crisis Arizona schools are facing? When Mr. Biggs says, “We have an excellent educational system at the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s annual legislative kickoff lunch in Phoenix, he ignores that Arizona is one of the states that spends the least per student on public education. Arizona also ranks very poorly in overall dropout rates, Hispanic dropout rates, as well a low percentage of Arizona residents with college degrees.
Editor's Note: These letters to the editor have been sorted by topic by the Tribune editorial staff in an effort to allow readers to read varied opinions on the issues, candidates, and other circumstances surrounding the 2012 general election. These submissions are the opinions of the author, not the Tribune, and have not been edited for grammar or content.
Mitt Romney’s stance on immigration is not on the same page as his religion. It should be vividly noted especially here in Arizona, the church neither discriminates against the undocumented nor denies them access to a Mormon temple or to any of the ordinances prescribed for adherents of the LDS faith.
Last week in Gilbert Town Council meeting, the town of Gilbert got a great example of what happens when we have a tea party-dominated council. The Solar Sleeve Project on the city’s light poles came up for a vote. This was a proven successful project and was given a green light by Mayor Lewis and two other council members, Ben Cooper and John Sentz.
President Obama has taken the step in the right direction. Since Congress has not acted on the Dream Act it is the perfectly right time to make the move to make sure if SB 1070 is found in favor of the State of Arizona, the hard working immigrants will be protected. Jan Brewer, Sheriff Joe and Russell Pearce can take their racist stands in a highly-Hispanic populated state and they are all going to lose. The racist but supposedly religious politicians of our state who always want to preach “family values” want to break up families and send perfectly law-abiding kids educated in our schools that have parents paying taxes and contributing to our communities back to Mexico.
Mr. Chiazza (“Racism still prevalent in AZ,” May 27), like so many other liberals, continues to demonstrate that the left will say and do anything in order to promote the lie that SB 1070 is a “racist” law, and that Russell Pearce, Joe Arpaio, Ken Bennett, Jan Brewer, and tea party participants are “ultra right-wing” racist extremists who dislike Barack Obama because he’s part African American.
It should it not be of any surprise that our racist elected officials in this state would be doing anything differently in raising the “birther issue” once again. We must all remember that Arizona was the last state in the union to approve MLK Day as a legal holiday.
