    Austin Kennedy, a National Junior ROTC cadet at Apache Junction High School, will receive the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement on Wednesday at the district office.

    Kyrene de la Altadeña Middle School seventh-graders Alexandra Gutierrez, Abigail Kany, Rebecca Kim, Ashley Ong, Nora Wagner, and Sonoran Science Academy seventh-grader Ryann Yount dedicated more than 52 hours each in planning, organizing, making, and teaching others how to make Positioning Pillows. In all, the girls from Girl Scouts Cadet Troop 2292 made 131 pillows that they donated to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Cardon Children’s Medical Center at Banner Desert Hospital in Mesa.

    Cadet Lt. Col. Alyson M. Egan received the Bronze Patrick Henry Medallion for patriotic achievement and was named East Valley Cadet of the Year recently. Alyson is the battalion commander of the Army Junior ROTC unit at Mesa’s Red Mountain High. Her awards were presented by the Military Order of the World Wars.

The Westwood Air Force Junior ROTC cadets won the Grand Champion trophy at the first competition of the season. To earn the top title, Westwood won trophies in seven different categories.

The U.S. Military Academy beat out Air Force, Navy and more than 100 other colleges that participated in the World's Loudest Pep Rally contest to win a visit from the rock star. Matthews will play for cadets Nov. 14 and 15.
