BERLIN -- Chancellor Angela Merkel thanked former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev for making change possible in East Germany as she visited what was once a fortified border crossing on Monday - retracing her steps on the night 20 years ago the Berlin Wall fell.
This past week I have been in Europe to help commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. I went into this trip with a great deal of enthusiasm and an expectation that the heroes responsible for that momentous event be justly recognized. Sadly, I was instead reminded of how much we have willingly forgotten.
For conservatives and Republicans who are wondering what in the world happened to their party, we should recall June 12, 1987. That day, 21 years ago, President Ronald Reagan stood before the wall dividing East and West Berlin and directed his famous appeal to the leader of the then Soviet Union, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.”
One thing is certain if we’re ever to have a reasonable and workable border policy: No group will get everything it wants.

The rest of the world is happy, even ecstatic, over the outcome of our presidential election. Europe, especially, went nuts over Barack Obama - and nobody went nuttier than the French.
