"Life of Pi" is one of those lyrical, internalized novels that should have no business working on the screen. Quite possibly, it wouldn't have worked if anyone but Ang Lee had adapted it.

LOS ANGELES - Australian actor Heath Ledger and fiancee Michelle Williams are the parents of a daughter, according to a published report. The baby, named Matilda, was born Friday, according to People magazine. Ledger's publicist, Mara Buxbaum, had no comment on the report.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - "Brokeback Mountain" won a leading three awards, including best picture and best director for Ang Lee, but it was Philip Seymour Hoffman's entrancing portrayal of Truman Capote that captured the best actor honor Monday at the 11th annual Critics' Choice Awards.
