The Tribune is counting down the 37 remaining days until Super Bowl XLII at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale with a memory from each Super Bowl.
Super Bowl VI
When: Jan. 16, 1972
Where: Tulane Stadium; New Orleans
Score: Dallas 24, Miami 3
Defining moment: In the second quarter, Miami quarterback Bob Griese found himself being chased … and chased … and chased by Dallas defensive lineman Bob Lilly. When the hunt finally ended, Lilly had dropped Griese for a 29-yard loss.
Quotable: ”We were all determined nobody would stop us. We ran extremely well and I’ve always felt that if you can run on a team, you can beat that team. This is especially true when you have the great defense that we have.” — Dallas coach Tom Landry
Lasting impact: After years of talk that Landry and the Cowboys could not win the big one, they finally became champions. The NFC would win just two Super Bowls in the 1970s, both by Dallas. The Dolphins suffered the indignity of being the only team in Super Bowl history to fail to score a touchdown, but they would redeem themselves — in perfect fashion — the following season.
